Lewisham Child Sexual Abuser
In April 2008, a disturbing incident involving a pensioner from Lewisham captured public attention and raised serious concerns about safety and accountability. John Douthwaite, aged 69, was caught on CCTV surveillance at the Hilton London Metropole hotel located in Paddington, where he was seen engaging in inappropriate behavior towards a young girl. The footage showed Douthwaite seemingly eyeing the 10-year-old girl as she walked through the hotel corridors, an act that alarmed those who viewed the images.

At the time of the incident, which occurred on August 26 of the previous year, Douthwaite was staying at the hotel on a weekend trip with his wife, who was reportedly unwell. The hotel is a well-known four-star establishment, attracting many visitors from around the world. The court proceedings revealed that Douthwaite approached the girl, who was visiting London with her parents and her five-year-old brother from the Middle East. He then physically grabbed her by the shoulders and made an unsettling comment, telling her, “You’re beautiful,” before attempting to kiss her.

Prosecutor Anita Arora detailed the distressing encounter, explaining that the young girl felt frightened and uneasy when Douthwaite stopped her in the corridor. She attempted to walk past him, but he blocked her path by placing his hands on her shoulders and leaning in close to her face. During this confrontation, Douthwaite asked her, “Can I kiss you?” The girl, overwhelmed by fear, managed to break free and ran to find her mother, who was seated in the hotel’s restaurant. The incident prompted immediate police action, and Douthwaite was arrested the following day.

During police questioning, Douthwaite was shown CCTV images of himself holding the girl’s shoulders. He initially denied involvement, claiming that the person in the footage resembled him but was not him. Despite this, he was later identified in an identification parade, but he continued to insist that the child had mistaken him. It was only after further reflection that he admitted to the assault.

Judge Michael Gledhill sentenced Douthwaite to six months in prison, a sentence that was suspended for two years. In his remarks, the judge expressed strong disapproval of Douthwaite’s actions, stating, “You should be ashamed of yourself. You were seen on CCTV images eyeing her up.” The judge emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated regardless of the offender’s age. Douthwaite pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual assault of a child under 13, acknowledging his wrongdoing.

In addition to the suspended prison sentence, Douthwaite was ordered to undergo a two-year supervision program and was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of seven years. The case underscored the importance of vigilance in safeguarding children and highlighted the legal consequences faced by those who commit such offenses, regardless of their age or circumstances.
