JOHN CRAWFORD FROM ACKLAM CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN TEESSIDE COURT
In a case that has shocked the local community, 57-year-old John Crawford of Acklam was brought before Teesside Crown Court in March 2018 after police discovered a disturbing collection of child abuse images on his personal computer. The investigation revealed that Crawford had accumulated a total of 32 indecent images depicting children, with 14 classified at the most severe level under law. These images included both still photographs and moving pictures, portraying minors aged between eight and 15 years old.Police seized Crawford’s laptop on May 2 of the previous year, which served as the primary evidence in the case. Prosecutor Emma Atkinson detailed that the images were highly explicit and involved children in various compromising situations. Crawford pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of children, acknowledging his involvement in creating and possessing such material. Additionally, he admitted to possessing 93 extreme pornographic images that did not involve minors, further highlighting the extent of his online activity.
During the court proceedings, Crawford’s defense attorney, Duncan McReddie, emphasized that his client had shown remorse and expressed confidence that there would be no repeat of such behavior. McReddie pointed out that Crawford had made full admissions during police interviews and had previously pleaded guilty at the magistrates’ court. He also noted that Crawford had moved out of his former residence on Thackeray Grove in Acklam, Middlesbrough, which had since been sold, indicating a possible attempt to distance himself from his past actions.
Judge Howard Crowson, presiding over the case, acknowledged Crawford’s cooperation and the positive pre-sentence report, which addressed the seriousness of his offenses. The judge explained that each viewing of such images further harms the children depicted and perpetuates the illegal market for such material. Recognizing the potential for rehabilitation, Judge Crowson decided to suspend the prison sentence, citing Crawford’s personal circumstances and the significant impact that imprisonment would have on him.
As part of his sentence, Crawford was given a 10-month jail term, suspended for one year, along with 30 days of rehabilitation activities. Furthermore, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, restricting his access to computers, devices, and the internet to prevent any future offenses. The judge concluded with a stern warning, stating that the primary goal was to ensure that such incidents do not recur. He emphasized that if Crawford were to offend again, he would almost certainly face immediate imprisonment, expressing little expectation of seeing him in court for similar charges in the future.
