A man from Coventry has received a prison sentence for sexual offenses that occurred more than four decades ago.
John Conway, aged 79, was sentenced on Friday following an investigation into allegations of abuse against a girl during the 1970s and 1980s.
Between 1978 and 1985, Conway repeatedly subjected the girl—who was known to him—to sexual assault and rape.
The conviction came after the victim, now an adult, came forward to police to share her experiences.
An investigation led to Conway being interviewed in 2020.
During the interview, he denied the allegations, which took place in the areas of The Boxhill and Moorfield within Stoke Aldermoor.
Conway, who had prior convictions dating back to the 1970s for burglary, theft, and handling stolen goods, was formally charged with rape and indecent assault in 2021.
Following a trial at Warwick Crown Court, he was sentenced to 17 years in prison and will be registered as a sex offender for life.
