March 2012 Sickening Oldbury sex attacker jailed for 18 years A SERIAL sex attacker from Oldbury found guilty of three rapes and 12 indecent assaults on young girls in the area 20 years ago has been jailed for 18 years. Judge Michael Challinor told 49-year-old John Clews his crimes were so serious only a substantial prison sentence was justified. Clews, of Rood End Road, was found guilty of all 15 charges by a jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court at the end of a 13-day trial. The judge, who said Clews had put his victims through the ordeal of having to relive the offences committed between November 1989 and June 1992, disqualified him from ever working with children. He was also made the subject of an unlimited sexual offenders protection order and will be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life. After the case, detective inspector John Smith said: “It is without doubt that Clews presented a real danger to our communities and, with this in mind, I would like to thank our dedicated protection officers who, by carrying out a thorough and at times difficult investigation, have helped make our streets safer.” He added: “I also hope that the decision of the court will go some way to giving the individuals involved in this case a sense of justice so that they can move on with their lives.” The trial was told the victims had been badly affected by the actions of Clews with one describing the ordeal of giving evidence to the jury as “horrific.”
