JOHN CLEWS OLDBURY SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR MULTIPLE RAPE AND ASSAULT CHARGES
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Oldbury community, John Clews, a 49-year-old man from Rood End Road, was convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over two decades ago.The court proceedings revealed that Clews was found guilty of three counts of rape and twelve counts of indecent assault, all involving young girls in the Oldbury area between November 1989 and June 1992.
Following a comprehensive 13-day trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, a jury unanimously convicted Clews on all fifteen charges.
The presiding judge, Michael Challinor, emphasized the severity of Clews's crimes, stating that only a substantial prison sentence could be justified given the gravity of his offenses.
As a result, Clews was sentenced to a lengthy term of 18 years in prison.
Judge Challinor also made it clear that Clews's actions had inflicted profound trauma on his victims.
The court disqualified him from ever working with children again and imposed an unlimited sexual offenders protection order.
Additionally, Clews will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions aimed at safeguarding the community.
Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector John Smith commented on the case, stating, “It is without doubt that Clews presented a real danger to our communities and, with this in mind, I would like to thank our dedicated protection officers who, by carrying out a thorough and at times difficult investigation, have helped make our streets safer.” He further expressed hope that the court’s decision would provide some measure of justice for the victims, many of whom suffered deeply from Clews’s actions.
One victim described the experience of giving evidence in court as “horrific,” highlighting the emotional toll that the case has taken on those involved.
Overall, the conviction and sentencing mark a significant step in addressing the crimes committed by John Clews and serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to protect vulnerable members of society from predatory individuals.
