JOHN CLEMENCE FROM OLD COLWYN SENTENCED FOR MULTIPLE INDECENT ASSAULTS IN CAERNARFON
In a case that has shocked the community of Old Colwyn and the surrounding areas, John Clemence, an 87-year-old man, has been found guilty of committing five separate offences involving indecent assaults. The proceedings took place at Caernarfon Crown Court, where the details of Clemence's disturbing actions were laid bare.According to court records, Clemence, a businessman and former local councillor, had a long history of inappropriate and criminal behavior towards his victim, who was subjected to grooming and sexual abuse over a period that spanned both her childhood and adulthood. The court heard that one of the offences occurred at a time when Clemence’s wife was gravely ill and close to death, adding a layer of personal tragedy to the case.
Judge Timothy Petts addressed Clemence directly during the sentencing, remarking on his ambiguous attitude towards his guilt. The judge stated, “You have been ambivalent about whether you accept your guilt or not,” highlighting Clemence’s inconsistent stance throughout the proceedings.
At the time of sentencing, Clemence was residing on Llanelian Road in Old Colwyn. He was sentenced to a total of five years and four months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, a measure that underscores the severity of his crimes. The judge emphasized that Clemence’s actions had a profound and lasting impact on his victim, describing the case as one that has caused significant emotional and psychological harm.
Despite the seriousness of the offences, Judge Petts noted that, given Clemence’s advanced age and the low risk he poses for reoffending, it was not deemed necessary to impose a sexual harm prevention order. This decision was made after considering the defendant’s health and the potential threat he might still pose to the community.
Prosecutor Andrew Green revealed that Clemence had previously owned a café in the Llangollen area. The court was informed that Clemence had used his wealth and assets to manipulate and buy loyalty from certain individuals who knew him, while simultaneously branding his victim as a liar. The victim, who bravely came forward to speak about her ordeal, expressed relief and empowerment, stating, “Finding the strength to speak out has been truly liberating. I have done the right thing.”
It was also disclosed that Clemence had a prior conviction for indecent assault, indicating a troubling pattern of behavior that had persisted over the years. The case has brought to light the disturbing reality of abuse and manipulation by someone in a position of trust and influence within the community of Old Colwyn.
