SHOCKING ABUSE BY 75-YEAR-OLD IN BELFAST: VICTIMS' LIVES SHATTERED

A 75-year-old man, whose identity remains protected to shield the victims, has been sentenced to a substantial prison term of seven and a half years for the heinous sexual abuse inflicted upon four of his young relatives. The court heard that the offender, who had previously admitted guilt, carried out a disturbing campaign of sexual misconduct spanning nearly 15 years, from October 1976 to June 1991. His victims included three nieces and one nephew, with one of the victims being as young as five years old when the abuse first began.

Most of these crimes reportedly took place within the confines of his own bedroom, often when he was under the influence of alcohol. Despite his initial denials during police interviews, where he claimed not to have any sexual interest in children, he later expressed remorse and demonstrated some insight into the harm his actions caused, as documented in his pre-sentence report. The judge overseeing the case emphasized the severity of his culpability, highlighting the breach of trust involved and the pattern of opportunistic, planned offenses that were committed with disturbing frequency during the 1980s, a period when he was in his mid-30s.

The court was told that the abuse only came to an end following the death of his mother, which resulted in a reduction of contact with the victims. To further prevent any possibility of reoffending, the sentence also includes an additional 18 months on supervised release.
