JOHN CARIGNANI SENTENCED IN GLASGOW FOR CHILD RAPE CASE
In a case that has shocked the community of Glasgow, John Carignani, a 41-year-old man, was convicted and sentenced for the sexual assault of a ten-year-old girl.The incidents took place at two different locations within the city, specifically in December 2014 and April of the following year.
Despite the Crown Office initially considering the evidence insufficient to press charges, the case took a significant turn after Carignani's own admissions.
It was the victim's mother who uncovered the disturbing truth.
When she confronted Carignani, he did not deny his actions.
Instead, he confessed to the sexual assaults, claiming that he had lost control of himself during the incidents.
His remorse appeared evident as he expressed feelings of despair and contemplated suicide in a series of text messages.
In one message, he wrote, “I can only say I’m sorry for everything.
I’ll be dead by the morning.
I’m sorry.” Further evidence was gathered through a letter sent by Carignani to the victim’s mother, in which he stated, “I lost control of myself and I tried to hide that.
Please don’t think of me as some kind of a monster, because I am not.
Not really.” This letter, along with the text messages and a recorded phone conversation between Carignani and the girl’s mother, formed the core of the evidence that led to his prosecution.
During the proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh, the judge was presented with this collection of evidence, which was deemed sufficient to support charges of child rape and sexual assault.
The court heard that Carignani, who was unemployed and formerly resided on Cuthelton Street in Tollcross, Glasgow, had committed these heinous acts in private homes within the city.
In his sentencing, Lord Boyd sentenced Carignani to four and a half years in prison.
Additionally, he ordered that Carignani be placed under supervision for a further three years and be registered on the sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from potential future harm.
