JOHN CAIZLEY SENTENCED IN SOUTH SHIELDS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON BOY IN SUPERMARKET
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of South Shields, a man named John Caizley has been convicted and sentenced for sexually abusing a young boy after grooming his way into a family’s trust. The incident, which took place over a span of two years, culminated in a serious assault that has left lasting scars on the victim and his family.
Caizley, aged 71, deliberately targeted a family in South Shields, South Tyneside, with the intent of establishing a close relationship with the young boy.
Over time, he gained their confidence by engaging in seemingly benign acts such as buying gifts, providing food, and giving money to the child.
These actions were part of a calculated grooming process designed to lower the boy’s defenses and make him more vulnerable to further abuse.
The criminal conduct reached a disturbing peak during a shopping trip in 2018.
Caizley, during this outing, offered the boy soft drinks, ostensibly to keep him calm and cooperative.
Once inside the supermarket, he lured the boy to the toilets under false pretenses.
It was there that Caizley committed a sexual assault, an act that the young victim later disclosed to his family that same evening.
The family promptly reported the incident to the police, initiating a criminal investigation.
Following his arrest, Caizley faced multiple charges, including two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and three counts of sexual assault by touching.
His trial was held at Newcastle Crown Court in May, where he was found guilty on all five counts.
The court proceedings revealed the extent of Caizley's manipulative behavior and the harm inflicted upon the young victim.
On July 22, Caizley was sentenced to four years in prison.
In addition to his custodial sentence, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which permanently restricts him from having any unsupervised contact with children.
This order aims to prevent any future harm and protect other potential victims from similar abuse.
During the court hearing, a statement was read out on behalf of the victim’s family, expressing their anguish and the profound impact of Caizley’s actions.
The statement stated: “John had befriended our family, in my mind, in order to groom my son.
I had never met John until he approached us whilst shopping in Jarrow two years ago.
He seemed friendly and supportive.
He gained our trust.
Since the assaults, my son has become withdrawn, rarely goes out to play, and avoids interaction with adults he once knew.
He had no reason to lie, and forensic evidence strongly supported his account.
Yet, Caizley increased the trauma he had already inflicted upon my son by making him give evidence at court.
Caizley has taken the fun, trust, and innocence from my son.” This case highlights the dangers of grooming and the importance of vigilance within communities to protect vulnerable children from predators like John Caizley, whose actions have caused irreparable damage to a young life and shattered the trust of a family in South Shields.
