Immingham Domestic Abuser
A man named John Burton, aged 62, was involved in a violent assault on his girlfriend in her Immingham home. The court heard that Burton had consumed two and a half bottles of whisky on the day of the incident. He had been in an on-off relationship with the victim for about three years, but the relationship was now ended with Burton having a new partner. On May 5, Burton visited the woman's home and, after some altercations, he repeatedly punched her on the head, causing her to fear for her life. He also grabbed her by the jumper, causing bruising to her neck, and wrestled over a whisky bottle, which he struck her with so forcefully that it shattered. Further violence included pulling her hair, shaking her head, pressing his thumb into her eye socket and twisting it. The victim managed to escape by locking him in the flat and fleeing to a neighbor. She sustained extensive bruising, swelling, a lump on her head, and a bloodshot eye. The court was told that Burton had 11 previous convictions for assault, causing actual bodily harm. Burton admitted to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and was sentenced to a year in jail. Additionally, he was given an indefinite restraining order restricting contact with the victim. The judge described the attack as sustained and mentioned that it took place in her own home, adding, 'This was a sustained attack on somebody you professed to love and wanted to live with.' Burton, from Havelock Court, Grimsby, showed remorse and made efforts to turn his life around, having now extricated himself from alcohol dependence.
