CONVICTED RAPIST AND VIOLENT OFFENDER SENTENCED AFTER HOSPITAL ASSAULT
John Bisson, a convicted sex offender with a history of serious crimes including raping a sleeping woman and threatening her with a knife in 2009, was recently involved in violent behavior at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital after being stabbed by a drug dealer.
While waiting for medical treatment, the 31-year-old, who had been drinking heavily and was under the influence of drugs, became agitated and abusive towards hospital staff and officers.
He was forcibly removed from the hospital's admissions desk, during which he began swearing loudly.
When a patient told him to keep quiet, Bisson approached the patient with his hands in his pockets and suddenly headbutted him without warning or provocation, injuring the patient's nose.
He was promptly arrested and later sentenced to 12 months in prison for the assault.
Judge Peter Ross criticized Bisson's violent conduct, highlighting that the attack was unacceptable in hospital environments and relating it to the risks associated with his lifestyle in the drug world.
Bisson has a lengthy criminal record with 25 convictions for 58 offenses.
Previously, in 2009, Bisson was convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman as she slept, and of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, for which he received a five-year prison sentence.
He admitted to having sex with the woman while she was asleep and intoxicated, and subsequently holding a knife to her throat when she accused him of rape.
The court described his actions as serious offenses, and he was sentenced to five years for the rape and 18 months for the ABH, to run concurrently.
