Spalding Rapist
In a significant development in the fight against sexual abuse, John Beebe, a man with ties to the town of Spalding, has been found guilty of multiple counts of indecent assault, bringing closure to a victim who endured years of trauma.
The victim, a woman now aged 48 and residing in Chesterfield, chose to remain anonymous for legal reasons. She recounted her harrowing experiences of being molested by her family friend, John Beebe, 67, of Lime Walk, Long Sutton, in Spalding, during her early teenage years. The abuse spanned nearly three years, beginning when she was just 12 years old and continuing until she was 15.
During the trial at Derby Crown Court, which concluded on Friday, February 10, the jury found Beebe guilty of four counts of indecent assault committed between November 1981 and June 1984. The court heard detailed accounts from the victim, who described her feelings of fear, confusion, and helplessness during the period of abuse.
The woman expressed her relief upon hearing of Beebe’s conviction, stating to the Derbyshire Times, “When I found out he had been found guilty and remanded in custody I felt I could take off and fly. It was such a weight off my mind. I am definitely glad I went through with this because I now feel like a different person.”
Her courage was further demonstrated through her emails to Beebe, which she sent during the period when the Jimmy Savile revelations made headlines. In her messages, she hinted at the possibility of other victims and warned Beebe that “names coming out of the woodwork” and “more than a few quaking in their boots waiting to get the knock on the door.” Her final email expressed hope that Beebe would complain, believing it would “open a whole can of festering worms.”
The victim detailed her traumatic experiences, revealing that the abuse began in November 1981 when Beebe allegedly told her he would “show her the way into womanhood.” She recounted being assaulted at Beebe’s former bungalow in Inkersall, in his car, at a gym, and at a house in Hollingwood. She described feeling terrified, conditioned, and afraid of the repercussions if she spoke out.
Her testimony included descriptions of being kissed, having her genitals and breasts touched, being made to touch Beebe’s genitals, and being forced to perform oral sex. She emphasized the profound impact of these events on her life and expressed gratitude for the support from her family, friends, and the police, describing them as “absolutely brilliant.”
Beebe, in his defense, claimed that the victim had an infatuation with him. He also told police that when he received emails from her between 2012 and 2014, he deleted them because he disliked confrontation. Despite this, the jury convicted him on four counts of indecent assault. He was also accused of raping the victim at his garage business and during a family holiday, but was found not guilty of the alleged rape between November and December 1981. A further count of alleged rape from December 1981 to June 1984 remains under review by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Following his conviction, Beebe was remanded in custody and is scheduled for sentencing on Thursday, February 16. The victim expressed her hope that her case would encourage other victims to come forward, emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability. She stated, “This case proves justice can be done after all this time. It was a frightening experience to have to go back to where you were all that time ago but I would say to anyone in a similar position that it is important to get it out there.”
