MAN JAILED FOR NEGLECT DEATH OF SISTER IN NORTH SHIELDS
John Barrass, aged 55, was convicted of manslaughter after it was revealed that he had neglected his disabled sister, Cynthia Barrass, for a period of two weeks. The incident occurred in their shared residence on Central Avenue in North Shields, following her fall in February 2010.
Cynthia, who had learning difficulties, was found in a dire state—covered with sores and suffering from hypothermia—conditions that contributed to her death shortly after she was taken to hospital.
Barrass acknowledged his responsibility and pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
He was subsequently sentenced to serve two years and eight months behind bars.
The case drew attention to significant shortcomings in care and neglect, with authorities criticizing his apparent failure or refusal to care for his vulnerable sibling.
Police and safeguarding agencies described the situation as profoundly tragic and are undertaking a serious case review to help avoid similar tragedies in the future.
