JOHN ARTHUR FAIRBURN AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN YORK, YORK

A man convicted of extensive sexual offences against minors in York has seen his prison sentence significantly increased after a survivor bravely came forward after decades of silence.

John Arthur Fairburn, now 74 years old, had a long history of abusing young girls, beginning when they were as young as seven and extending over several years.

The court heard that Fairburn was responsible for the repeated sexual assault of his victims, including an incident involving a woman who suffered his abuse when she was just nine years old.

It was only after reports of his earlier convictions and the details of his crimes against other young girls surfaced that the victim felt able to break her silence and report her experiences to the police.

This act of courage ultimately led to Fairburn facing justice.

Nick Adlington, prosecuting, described how the woman’s revelation about decades-old abuse prompted further investigation.

In her personal statement, she expressed regret that she had not spoken out sooner: "I wish I had spoken up when I was younger, it may have saved others." She also spoke about the ongoing emotional toll the abuse has taken, stating, "No apology can make up for his depraved actions.

The shame and embarrassment I suffered because of Fairburn at times still overwhelm me some days." The survivor recounted how Fairburn exploited her innocence throughout her childhood, leaving deep scars both emotionally and psychologically.

Despite receiving counselling as a young woman, she found it difficult to fully confront her experiences and stopped attending sessions early.

She described the profound effect the abuse had on her, highlighting how the effects of Fairburn’s misconduct persisted well into her adult life.

Fairburn, formerly a farmer based in Deighton, south of York, had initially pleaded guilty to eight counts of indecent assault involving the woman, with the assaults dating back to her under-13 years of age.

After a pause of a couple of years, he committed further sexual offences against two other girls, starting when they were only seven years old.

Among his previous convictions, he was jailed for five and a half years in November 2020 for these latter offences, which included 10 counts of sexual assault and an incitement to sexual activity involving the two girls.

The sentencing hearing took place at York Crown Court, where Judge Sean Morris described the offending as "wicked" and emphasized the need for an appropriate punishment.

As a result, he sentenced Fairburn to eight additional years in prison, to be served following his current sentence.

This means that Fairburn now faces a total incarceration period of approximately 13 and a half years, with an extra year to be served on parole upon his release.

Furthermore, the court imposed a sexual harm prevention order indefinitely to prevent Fairburn from contacting the victims and issued a restraining order banning him from any contact with the three victims.

He will also remain on the sex offender register for the rest of his life, underlining the serious ongoing restrictions placed upon him.

Kevin Blount, speaking on behalf of Fairburn, stated that his client feels a profound sense of shame and has shown genuine remorse for his actions.

Fairburn admitted his guilt early in both cases, cooperating with authorities and courts from the outset.

The court noted that the abuse of the two girls, which began when they were only seven, lasted for about four years.

One of the victims already faced difficulties before her abuse, adding to the trauma she endured.

Overall, the case highlights the long-lasting impact of childhood sexual abuse and the importance of victims coming forward, even after many years, to seek justice and protect others from similar harm in the future.
