Middlesbrough Normanby Rapist
In June 2008, a disturbing case unfolded involving John Allan, a 34-year-old man from Middlesbrough and Normanby, who engaged in a series of inappropriate and illegal activities with a 13-year-old girl. The incident began when Allan, a mature student, connected with the young girl through an internet chatroom, where he groomed her with the apparent intent of establishing a sexual relationship.

After grooming her online, Allan arranged to meet the girl in Darlington, a town in the Teesside area. Upon meeting, he took her to a hotel, but due to the hotel being fully booked, he moved her to another nearby hotel. During this process, Allan falsely told hotel staff that the girl was his sister to avoid suspicion, according to the prosecution.

Once in the hotel room, the two remained together for approximately thirty minutes. During this time, Allan attempted to engage in sexual activity with the girl, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The girl later confided in a friend’s home about what had transpired and continued to communicate with Allan through text messages. Prosecutor Richard Bennett revealed that Allan had asked her if she would join another girl for sex, but upon learning that she had shared details with friends, Allan told her, “It has to stop.”

When questioned by police, Allan claimed that the girl had told him she was 18 years old. He expressed remorse, stating, “As soon as I realised she was younger, nowt happened. I feel sick.” A police surgeon examined the girl and confirmed that her body was immature and could not be mistaken for someone aged 16 or older, highlighting her young age.

During the court proceedings, Ian West, representing Allan, emphasized that the civil engineering student at the University of Teesside should have ceased his actions once he realized the girl was underage. Allan, residing on Kirknewton Road in Normanby, Middlesbrough, was ultimately sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for two years, and received two years of supervised probation. The judge, Brian Forster, acknowledged that Allan claimed he was unaware of the girl’s true age until they met.

Furthermore, Allan was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was given a lifetime ban from working with children. Following the case, Wendy Shepherd, children’s services manager for Barnardo’s on Teesside, issued a warning about the dangers of the internet, stressing the importance of parental vigilance to protect young people from such risks. The case underscores the ongoing challenges faced in safeguarding children from online predators and the importance of awareness and preventative measures.
