MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF A CHILD IN SURREY
A resident of Frimley Green has received a 15-year prison sentence after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a minor.Joel Hanby, aged 43, was convicted of abusing a child under the age of 13, with the abuse having begun when the victim was approximately seven or eight years old.
Police reports indicated that the victim disclosed the abuse to her teacher in March 2023, which resulted in Hanby’s immediate arrest the next day.
Detective Constable Kiki Phillips, who led the investigation, commented: “We recognize the courage and strength shown by the survivor at such a young age throughout the investigation and court process.
“She showed bravery in reporting the abuse she endured from Hanby.” “The detailed and compelling evidence she provided led the jury to convict him, and he was subsequently sentenced to prison, where he will be unable to harm any more children.” During police interviews, Hanby tried to shift blame, mentioning personal struggles and accusing the survivor of dishonesty.
The court also stated that after serving a minimum of 10 years, Hanby will be subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order along with a restraining order to safeguard the survivor and her family.
The survivor’s mother spoke in court about how the abuse had affected her daughter, noting significant changes in her mood and relationships.
Detective Constable Phillips added: “Hanby exploited the trust placed in him over several years to commit these reprehensible acts against the survivor.” “I extend my sympathies to the family as they begin to recover from this difficult chapter.” “I hope the survivor can pursue her goals and succeed without the shadow of Hanby’s actions hindering her progress.”
