CEREDIGION MAN JOEL EVANS JAILED FOR RAPE
A man raped a woman following a drugs and alcohol-fuelled party held at a remote rural property in the Welsh countryside, a court has heard.Joel Evans denied the allegation, but the court sentenced him to five-and-a-half years in prison for the attack.
The victim described how it had been an "awful" experience to be in the same room as him again and to "breathe the same air." A judge at Swansea Crown Court stated that Evans's judgement was "grossly affected" by substances he had consumed when the attack happened.
Despite some references suggesting support for Evans, the judge emphasized that the jury was sure the victim gave a truthful account of what occurred, with Evans maintaining his innocence throughout.
The court heard the incident took place in October 2022 at a rural property in Ceredigion, where Evans was among several men drinking alcohol and taking drugs at a party.
The rape was reported to police, and Evans was arrested and denied the allegations.
The victim's statement revealed she experienced intense anxiety, depression, nightmares, and had become fearful of leaving her home, along with losing trust in men.
She expressed that court proceedings were frightening, but she felt proud to have stood up for justice.
Evans, of Talsarn, Ceredigion, was convicted after a trial of one count of rape.
His defense highlighted that he was a young father and described him as a pleasant individual based on references submitted to the court.
Judge Richards acknowledged that Evans's judgement was heavily influenced by alcohol and drugs but reaffirmed the conviction, stressing the jury's certainty about her account.
