JOE DUFFY GUILTY OF CHILD SEX ABUSE IN GLASGOW - VICTIMS REVEAL HORRIFIC DETAILS
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Glasgow community, Joe Duffy, a 60-year-old man with a long history of volunteer work at a children’s home, has been convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse and grooming of three young children over three decades ago.The allegations, which surfaced during a recent trial, paint a disturbing picture of exploitation and betrayal within the confines of a home run by nuns in the 1980s.
During the proceedings, the jury swiftly reached a verdict, taking less than two hours to find Duffy guilty of multiple counts of child sexual abuse.
Duffy, who also served as a civilian police custody officer for twenty years, responded to the verdict by describing the allegations as “mind-boggling and incredible,” a statement that starkly contrasts with the evidence presented in court.
Prosecutors detailed how Duffy, during his time as a volunteer at the children’s home in Glasgow, engaged in grooming behaviors before escalating to sexual assault.
The court heard that he would often drive the children in a minibus to various outings, including trips to Loch Lomond and local swimming pools, and would stay overnight at the home on Fridays, sleeping in the same premises as the children.
One of the victims, a young girl, recounted a traumatic experience where Duffy raped her during a sleepover when she was just 12 years old, while he was approximately 24 or 25.
She described the assault taking place in the living room of the home, with other children sleeping nearby.
She testified that the nun in charge would go to bed at 10:00 pm, leaving Duffy in charge of the children, and she expressed her distress, stating, “Did you want him to do that?” to which she responded, “No.” Another sister revealed that Duffy’s abuse extended over many years, beginning when she was around 13 or 14.
She explained that the inappropriate touching started at the swimming pool and culminated in a rape at Duffy’s Glasgow residence on the day she was supposed to leave the care home.
Instead of driving her home to her family, Duffy took her to his house and assaulted her there.
A 46-year-old man also testified that Duffy sexually abused him at the care home.
He recounted how Duffy would take him on weekends, strip naked, and engage in sexual acts with him, despite the boy being only 11 years old at the time.
When asked if he wanted Duffy to do these things, he replied that he did not, emphasizing his young age and the trauma inflicted.
While Duffy was convicted of these crimes, he was acquitted of allegations involving two other boys at the same care home.
Following the revelations, Duffy was suspended from his employment at Clydebank police station, where he was responsible for overseeing prisoners in custody.
He has no prior criminal record.
He is scheduled to be sentenced at the High Court in Aberdeen on March 16 by Lord Kinclaven.
Currently, Duffy remains in custody, has been remanded, and has been placed on the sex offenders register, marking a significant development in a case that has uncovered disturbing truths about abuse within a trusted community setting in Glasgow.
