YOUNG SOFTWARE ENGINEER SPARED JAIL AFTER DENYING INDECENT EXPOSURE
A MAN who exposed himself from his window has been spared jail.Joe Beadle was accused of indecent exposure in Colchester in March last year, when he caused a public nuisance by performing a sexual act in front of a window.
He denied the charges and was tried at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court and found guilty.
Appearing before the same court on Tuesday, it was heard Beadle had no previous convictions, and he had just turned 22.
The defence argued he lacked maturity and suffered from depression and anxiety, for which he has been seeking help.
The senior engineer had an 11-page-long report written on him by the probation service, the court heard, prior to his sentencing.
His Honour Judge Christopher Williams said: “You were found guilty after trial.
It is difficult to pass judgment on the report, as you were asked about an offence you had up until then denied.
But you managed to engage well.
While the pre-sentence report doesn’t really find a cause, it seems to suggest mental health is something that needs to be explored.
It is important we work out what the issue is now.” The extensive paper included studies about young offenders, and particularly young male offenders.
Judge Williams said: “Either you were a young person bored and sexually frustrated, or something more sinister is going on.” Due to the seriousness of the offence, the judge urged the defendant to take the time of his sentence to find the cause of his offending and seek help.
Beadle, of Mersea Road, Abberton, was sentenced to an 18-month community order under which he has to take part in up to 30 rehabilitation activity days.
The order also placed him on the sex offenders register for five years, which means he will have to comply with notification requirements with the police.
He was also ordered to pay £650 in costs and a victim surcharge of £114.
