JODY HAWKINS AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENSES IN SOMERSET
A man from Somerset, Jody Hawkins, has been convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses that were reportedly committed while he was under the influence of crack cocaine.The court proceedings detailed how Hawkins transformed from an ordinary individual into someone who committed increasingly alarming acts of public indecency and sexual misconduct.
According to the court, Hawkins, aged 41 and residing in Keynsham, engaged in a disturbing incident involving a young girl.
On a Facebook video call, Hawkins, dressed in only boxer shorts and socks, asked the 15-year-old girl personal questions which she found uncomfortable.
The situation escalated when Hawkins showed her a sex scene on his television and engaged in a sexual act himself, encouraging the young girl to do the same.
The girl, understandably embarrassed and distressed, declined to participate and later confided in her mother about the incident.
Authorities tracked Hawkins down, and he was arrested following her report.
Initially, Hawkins denied the allegations but eventually pleaded guilty to several serious charges, including engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, causing a child to observe sexual acts, and enticing a child to participate in sexual activity.
The court also heard about other disturbing incidents involving Hawkins that took place in public places.
While in a ladies’ lavatory, he exposed himself to a woman aged 69.
Subsequently, he followed a woman aged 71 into a garden and allegedly made a lewd remark, stating, "I bet you haven't seen a d*** like this for a long time," before exposing himself and performing a sexual act in front of her.
One of the women, who was in her seventies, expressed that the assault had left her feeling vulnerable, particularly since she had recently been ill.
The younger victim who witnessed Hawkins’ misconduct described enduring significant emotional distress, including flashbacks, which adversely affected her mental health.
In light of these serious offenses, the court took a stern stance.
Judge Moira Macmillan sentenced Hawkins to a prison term of two years and four months.
She emphasized the gravity of the crimes, explicitly asking Hawkins to empathize with his victims' positions.
Furthermore, she imposed a lifelong restraining order to prevent any contact with the young complainant and issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order to curb reoffending.
Hawkins was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of 10 years.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Charles Thomas, highlighted Hawkins’ state of intoxication during the offenses.
Thomas stated that Hawkins was only wearing boxer shorts and socks during the Facebook incident and that his behavior was exacerbated by his drug use.
Defense counsel, George Threlfall, argued that Hawkins was under the influence of drugs at the time and lacked clear memory of the events.
Threlfall noted that Hawkins was now sober and expressed remorse, acknowledging that his actions were profoundly wrong—attributable to his misuse of crack cocaine, which in his view, impaired his self-control.
The case underscores the devastating impact substance abuse can have, leading to episodes of unacceptable and illegal conduct.
The authorities stressed the importance of accountability and safeguarding victims from further harm, reinforcing the need for offenders to face legal consequences for their actions in Somerset.
