JESSICA JONES FROM PLYMOUTH AND EXETER SENTENCED FOR CHILD CRUELTY AND SMOTHERING INCIDENTS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Plymouth and Exeter, Jessica Jones, a 22-year-old woman, has been sentenced to six years in prison for her heinous acts of child cruelty involving her two infant sons.The incidents, which spanned nearly two years, involved repeated episodes of suffocation that left the young children unconscious on multiple occasions.
Jones, who resided in Whitleigh, Plymouth, was responsible for smothering her two sons, now aged two and three, a total of ten times.
These acts were carried out with such severity that paramedics found the children blue and unresponsive upon arrival at the hospital.
In a chilling detail, Jones recorded one of her children recovering after an assault on her mobile phone, capturing the aftermath of her abuse.
The court was informed that Jones would call emergency services, claiming her children had suffered fits, but the truth was far more sinister.
The children’s health was repeatedly compromised, and doctors at the hospital struggled to diagnose the cause of their episodes, as they always recovered quickly after treatment.
The severity of the situation was underscored by the fact that the children could have died during any of these episodes.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was that Jones allowed doctors to perform surgery on her youngest son under general anaesthetic to fit a heart monitor inside his chest, further highlighting her manipulative behavior.
The investigation uncovered that her abusive actions were caught on CCTV footage at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, which recorded her attacking one of her children again after they had been admitted for treatment.
It was revealed during the trial that Jones derived a 'perverse satisfaction' from watching her sons after she had smothered them.
The court heard that her first son was subjected to three smothering incidents between the ages of four and seven months in 2012, while her second son endured seven such episodes over a seven-month period from nine months old until the attack at the hospital in May 2014.
Throughout the ordeal, Jones’ ex-husband was not present in the home during any of the abusive episodes.
Judge Simon Carr, presiding over the case, emphasized the gravity of her actions, stating, “Given the young age of your sons, it is clear that on each occasion they could have died.” The judge sentenced Jones to six years in prison after she pleaded guilty to two counts of child cruelty.
While both boys are now reportedly doing well, the judge expressed concern about potential long-term health issues that may arise as they grow older.
He also remarked that there remains a lack of full understanding regarding Jones’ motives and the reasons behind her actions.
In a statement, the police highlighted the importance of the conviction and sentence, noting that protective measures implemented during the investigation would continue to ensure the children’s safety.
They emphasized that without the coordinated efforts of various agencies, more serious harm could have been inflicted on the children or future children in her care.
