JERRY SHEAHAN'S DUBLIN PREDATOR SCHEME: SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEEN GIRLS ON MALAHIDE ROAD AND BEYOND

In November 2013, a disturbing case emerged involving Jerry Sheahan, a man from Dublin who engaged in predatory behavior targeting teenage girls through deceptive online tactics.

Sheahan, aged 38 at the time, resided in Clare Hall Village, Malahide Road, Dublin, and used social media platforms to establish illicit contact with minors.

His actions spanned several months, from March to July 2011, during which he exploited the anonymity of the internet to prey on vulnerable young girls aged 15 and 16 across different counties, including Dublin itself.

Sheahan’s method involved creating a false online persona.

He set up a profile on Tagged.com, a social networking site, in the under-18 section.

Posing as a 16-year-old named Conor W, he included a teenage boy’s photograph to lend credibility to his profile.

This deception was part of a calculated effort to lure young girls into communication.

According to the prosecution, Sheahan, who was employed as an area manager with Centra, initiated contact with girls who also had profiles on the site.

He would send them messages asking them to text him back, and once contact was established, he would inquire about their identities and ages.

Det Garda Ray Andrews explained during the court proceedings that Sheahan would then introduce himself as Jerry, claiming he was not on Tagged.com and was actually 36 years old.

Using text messaging, he gradually built a rapport with the victims, often asking personal questions and establishing a sense of familiarity.

Over time, Sheahan arranged to meet the girls in person, often in secluded locations such as remote countryside areas or abandoned factory sites.

He would pick them up in his car, and these meetings led to sexual encounters.

One particularly disturbing incident involved Sheahan promising one of the girls a job when they first met.

Subsequently, he drove her to a quiet spot where she was coerced into performing oral sex before they engaged in intercourse.

Less than an hour later, he met her again and took her to another isolated location, where they had sex once more.

These encounters were carefully orchestrated, with Sheahan exploiting the girls’ vulnerability and trust.

The case came to light when a friend of one of the victims alerted her mother, prompting the girl’s family to contact the Gardaí.

During initial police interviews, Sheahan admitted to knowing the girl but denied any sexual activity.

However, ten days later, he contacted the Gardaí again and confessed to having intercourse with the girl on two occasions.

He also disclosed details about the other two victims, confirming his involvement.

The victims described their experiences to the authorities with emotional distress.

One girl, who was 15 going on 16 at the time, expressed feeling weak and vulnerable, admitting she felt uncomfortable during the sexual acts but was afraid to oppose Sheahan.

She also noted that her relationship with her parents had deteriorated, as they no longer trusted her.

Another victim stated she felt Sheahan had taken advantage of her and that her trust with her parents was broken because of what had happened.

The third girl revealed that she had turned to heavy drinking and had gone off the rails for several months after meeting Sheahan.

Sheahan’s defense lawyer acknowledged that his client, who held a degree in music and philosophy, and was employed as an area manager with Centra, accepted responsibility for his actions.

The lawyer highlighted that Sheahan had undergone 230 hours of group psychotherapy, indicating some effort at rehabilitation.

The defense argued that Sheahan was an ordinary man with a complex personality, but the damage caused to the victims, his own family, and friends was profound.

Judge Michael O Shea described Sheahan’s conduct as that of a predator, emphasizing that his sole motivation was to engage in sexual activity with the young girls.

The judge condemned the crimes as “disgusting sexual violation and abuse,” noting the severe impact on the victims, who were particularly young and vulnerable.

The judge stated that the nature of the offenses was serious enough to warrant consecutive sentences, reflecting the individual targeting of each girl.

Consequently, Sheahan was sentenced to three consecutive terms of two years each, with no consideration for suspension of the sentences.

The court’s decision underscored the gravity of the crimes and the need for justice to be served for the victims of this disturbing case in Dublin.
