JEREMY RAWLINS OF TORQUAY SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL INJURIES TO BABY IN PAIGNTON AND TORQUAY
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Torquay and Paignton, Jeremy Rawlins, a man with a troubling history, was recently convicted and sentenced for inflicting severe injuries on a young child. Rawlins, who was residing in Paignton at the time of his sentencing, previously lived in Torquay, where the incident took place. The court proceedings took place at Exeter Crown Court on October 13, 2000. Rawlins, an unemployed individual, faced charges related to grievous bodily harm inflicted upon an eight-week-old baby boy in 1999. The evidence presented during the trial painted a disturbing picture of the injuries sustained by the infant.
The court heard that the baby had suffered an astonishing 13 broken bones, including multiple fractured ribs, spiral fractures in both an arm and a leg, and a subdural haematoma—a life-threatening condition where blood accumulates between the skull and the brain's surface. These injuries were attributed directly to a head injury inflicted by Rawlins. The severity of the trauma was such that the child's mother found him fitting and immediately rushed him to the hospital. Upon arrival, the baby’s condition worsened as he stopped breathing, necessitating urgent resuscitation efforts.
Further details revealed that Rawlins was also found guilty of causing harm to a seven-month-old girl by breaking her arm. In addition to these charges, he faced a separate count of burglary involving a person close to the case. During questioning, Rawlins attempted to justify his violent actions by blaming alcohol, claiming it impaired his judgment at the time.
Despite the gravity of his crimes, Rawlins was sentenced to a relatively short term of 15 months in prison. Throughout the trial, he displayed little remorse for his actions, showing a lack of empathy or regret for the suffering he caused. His recent photograph, which has been circulated publicly, underscores the seriousness of his conviction and the ongoing concern within the community regarding his conduct.
