JEFFREY RIDD'S HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN SWANSEA: VICTIM'S PAINFUL TESTIMONY REVEALS SIX-YEAR NIGHTMARE
In June 2020, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse came to light in Swansea, involving Jeffrey Ridd, a man who subjected a young girl to a prolonged and heinous campaign of sexual violence over a span of six years. The details of the case were presented at Swansea Crown Court during the sentencing hearing, where Ridd pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to his appalling actions.
According to court records, Ridd, aged 58 and residing on Penmynydd Road in the Penlan area of Swansea, engaged in repeated acts of sexual assault against the young girl.
The court heard that during these assaults, he would often give her small sums of money, typically between £2 and £10, which he used as a means to manipulate and control his victim.
This pattern of abuse left her feeling degraded, akin to a prostitute, and caused her immense psychological trauma.
On one particularly distressing occasion, she feared she might have become pregnant as a result of the abuse.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Paul Hobson read out a heartfelt victim impact statement on behalf of the young girl, who had endured years of suffering in silence.
The statement painted a harrowing picture of her ongoing emotional scars.
She recounted that even now, she is haunted by the memories of her ordeal, stating, “When I close my eyes I still see him and what he did to me.” She expressed how her childhood years, which should have been filled with innocence and joy, were stolen from her by Ridd’s actions.
The victim described how her family noticed a change in her demeanor, noting that the sparkle in her eyes had faded.
She revealed that she has become increasingly withdrawn, spending much of her time alone in her room, plagued by dark memories.
Her ability to form and maintain friendships has been severely affected, and she struggles with sleep, often waking in panic with her abuser’s face in her mind.
Her trust in men has been shattered, making her wary even in everyday situations such as shopping, where male employees are present.
She concluded her statement by expressing feelings of worthlessness, a testament to the profound impact of Ridd’s abuse.
Jeffrey Ridd faced multiple serious charges, including nine counts of raping a child, three counts of sexual assault of a child, two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and four counts of sexual assault.
His actions were described by Judge Keith Thomas as “a campaign of sexual abuse,” emphasizing the prolonged and systematic nature of his crimes.
After considering the evidence and the severity of his offenses, the court sentenced Ridd to 18 years in prison.
Additionally, he will be subject to a one-year license period following his release, ensuring ongoing supervision and monitoring of his conduct.
The case highlights the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims who have endured such trauma in Swansea.
