Coleford Child Sexual Abuser
A 19-year-old man named Jayden Smith, originally from Coleford, has been sentenced to prison after admitting to serious sexual offences involving minors. The case was heard at Southampton Crown Court, where Smith appeared on Tuesday, February 5, to face charges related to his conduct. The offences included causing or inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity, as well as engaging in sexual communications with a minor.

Smith’s guilty plea came on the second day of his trial, and he was subsequently sentenced to a term of two years and nine months in prison during a hearing on Friday, April 11. The court also ordered Smith to sign the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes. Additionally, he was placed under a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a five-year restraining order, both measures designed to protect the community from further harm.

In connection with the case, authorities also imposed a deprivation order on Smith, which confiscated two mobile phones and a dash cam, devices believed to contain evidence related to his offending. The sentencing followed an incident that took place on Wednesday, July 3 of the previous year, involving a young victim. During this incident, Smith followed the child in his vehicle, then managed to isolate him in a wooded area in Botley. It was during this encounter that Smith asked the child to expose himself, an act that contributed to the charges against him.

Initially, there were additional charges, including an attempt to cause or incite a boy under 13 to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity and an attempted kidnapping with the intent to commit a sexual offence. However, these charges were dropped after Smith’s guilty plea to the primary offences.

Further, Smith admitted to sending sexual messages to another child in July 2024, encouraging the young victim to perform a sexual act. This second victim was from a different county, highlighting the extent of Smith’s inappropriate conduct across regions.

Prior to the sentencing, Smith was remanded in custody, awaiting the court’s decision. His Honour Rowland, presiding over the case, addressed the court and the victims, stating, “There are troubling aspects of your character that need to be addressed. This is a complex case with a complex young man who has committed offences against two young boys.”

In a compassionate remark directed at one of the victims and their family, His Honour added, “I have read with regret the impact this has had on the boy and his family. But I was struck in my meeting with the boy by his vitality and strength of character for one so young, which will serve him well as he continues to recover from what he was put through.”

Following the sentencing, Police Staff Investigator Rebecca Stevens from the Child Abuse Investigation Team expressed her satisfaction with the outcome. She stated, “I am pleased for the victims and their families that Smith has today been held accountable for his actions and justice has been served. He is now behind bars, where he belongs, and will have a significant amount of time to reflect on his actions. I hope this brings some closure to the victims and allows them to move forward, knowing that Smith cannot harm any more children.”

Investigator Stevens also praised the support of the victims and their families throughout the investigation, emphasizing their bravery and cooperation. She highlighted the importance of protecting children from abuse and assured the public that police remain committed to pursuing offenders. She urged anyone with concerns about child abuse to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111. In emergencies, always dial 999 to seek immediate assistance.
