Redditch Rapist
In a case that has shocked the Redditch community, Jason Todd, a 24-year-old man, was sentenced to three years in prison at Worcester Crown Court after admitting to multiple serious sexual offenses involving young boys. The court heard that Todd, who had previously been a Scout himself and later became a Scout leader at the age of 18, committed a series of disturbing acts against three boys over a period of time.

According to prosecutor William Rickarby, Todd assaulted a 13-year-old boy at the Scout troop’s hut and also molested two other boys aged 10 and 12 at a private residence. These offenses occurred on up to eleven separate occasions, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior. Todd pleaded guilty to nine counts of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child, acknowledging his guilt before the court.

The court was informed that Todd, who resided on Pembridge Close in Redditch, had a history of involvement with the Scouts, initially as a participant in his youth before taking on a leadership role. The allegations detailed how Todd initially asked his first victim to assist in moving equipment from a storeroom to an attic. During this task, while holding tent poles, Todd began to grope the boy, an act that was followed by an indecent assault. The young victim, overwhelmed by fear, did not report the incident at the time.

Further assaults occurred on subsequent occasions, but Todd’s activities were interrupted when the mother of another Scout arrived at the scene. It was only in March of the previous year that the first victim confided in his mother, revealing, “He tried to rape me,” which prompted the boy to seek counseling for the trauma he endured.

In addition to these incidents, Todd was found to have touched the private parts of two other boys who were not connected to the Scout troop, between August 1999 and January 2000. These revelations added to the severity of his offenses and contributed to his lengthy sentence.

During the court proceedings, Todd’s defense lawyer, Gareth Walters, emphasized that his client’s guilty pleas had spared the victims the ordeal of testifying in court. Mr. Walters also highlighted that Todd had taken steps to address his behavior, including consulting a psychologist and paying for therapy sessions with a specialist who works with offenders. The lawyer expressed remorse on Todd’s behalf, stating, “He is deeply sorry for what he’s done but realises a prison sentence must follow to reflect the court’s distaste.”

Judge David McEvoy QC sentenced Todd to three years in prison, with an additional two-year extension on his license upon release. Furthermore, Todd was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, acknowledging the gravity of his crimes. The judge recognized that although the offenses were very serious, Todd had shown some awareness of his sexual issues and had made efforts to seek help, which was taken into account during sentencing.
