JASON SLEIGHT'S SHOCKING CRIME IN YORK: SEXUAL ASSAULT AT RICCALL HOME LEADS TO EIGHT-YEAR SENTENCE
In August 2015, a man named Jason Gordon Roy Sleight was sentenced to serve eight years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl in Riccall, North Yorkshire. The incident took place while Sleight was an overnight guest at the child's residence, a fact that added to the gravity of the case.
The court proceedings revealed that Sleight, then 25 years old and residing on Viking Drive in Riccall, had engaged in inappropriate and criminal behavior during his stay, which was kept secret until the victim’s mother uncovered the truth.
According to court records, the young girl was in her home when Sleight, who was staying there as a guest, took advantage of her.
The jury was informed that Sleight showed the girl television content on his mobile phone in the bedroom where he was sleeping, before he proceeded to sexually assault her.
The assault was carried out in a manner that left the girl feeling compelled to keep quiet about what had happened.
It was only when her mother sensed that something was wrong that the girl confided in her, revealing the details of the abuse.
Once the mother learned of the assault, she immediately ordered Sleight to leave the house.
The incident occurred close to midnight, and Sleight did not resist her commands.
Later that night, Sleight was arrested by police officers while he was on his way home, showing no resistance to the arrest.
The court heard that Sleight did not object to being removed from the premises or to his subsequent detention.
During the trial at York Crown Court in May, Sleight maintained his innocence, denying the sexual assault charges.
Despite his protests, the jury deliberated for four hours before returning a guilty verdict.
The court was told that Sleight had a history of previous convictions, including assault, drink-driving, and other motoring offenses.
Notably, he had also been convicted of wounding after smashing a glass over his adult cousin’s head, for which he served an eight-month jail sentence.
On Thursday, the judge sentenced Sleight to eight years in prison, with an additional four years on extended license upon his release.
Furthermore, Sleight was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of his crime.
Detective Sergeant Fionna McEwan of North Yorkshire Police expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “It is satisfying to know that Sleight will now spend a number of years behind bars for his despicable crime.
He is now in a place where he can cause no harm to any other children.” She added, “Although this sentence will not offer any comfort to his young victim, I hope that it can be a starting point for her and her family to move forward with their lives.” During the proceedings, Sleight’s defense team highlighted his history of depression and requested that medical reports be considered by the court.
The judge adjourned sentencing to allow probation officers to prepare a report, indicating that all sentencing options remained open.
Sleight was released on bail under strict conditions, including residence at his home address, a nightly curfew, prohibition from contacting witnesses involved in the case, and staying out of the town where the girl lived.
The final sentencing was scheduled to take place in four weeks.
This case underscores the serious consequences of sexual offenses, especially involving vulnerable victims in familiar environments.
Sleight’s criminal record, which includes previous convictions for assault, wounding, and driving offenses, paints a picture of a man with a troubling history.
The court’s decision aims to protect the community and prevent further harm, ensuring that Sleight remains behind bars for a significant period and remains under supervision for life.
