JASON HOPE SENTENCED TO LIFE IN LEICESTER FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTER ESCAPING FROM DERBYSHIRE PRISON
In a case that has shocked the community of Leicester, Jason Hope, a 28-year-old man, was handed a life sentence by Leicester Crown Court after committing a heinous sexual assault on a 13-year-old boy.The incident occurred after Hope had previously escaped from Sudbury open prison in Derbyshire in May, an act that added to the severity of his criminal behavior.
Hope's escape from custody was a significant concern for authorities, and it was during this period that he carried out the assault in Leicester.
According to court reports, he forcibly dragged the young victim into nearby bushes at knifepoint, instilling fear and helplessness in the boy.
After the assault, Hope instructed the boy to remain near a secluded alleyway as he made his escape, leaving the victim traumatized and in shock.
The court heard that Hope pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including escaping from prison, engaging in sexual activity with a minor, and inciting a child to participate in sexual acts.
The judge, Christopher Metcalf, delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Hope's actions.
He sentenced Hope to life imprisonment with a minimum term of four years before eligibility for parole, though he noted that Hope's release within that timeframe was unlikely.
In his remarks, Judge Metcalf described Hope's conduct as 'simply terrifying,' highlighting the violent and sexual nature of the offences.
He stated, “After absconding from prison, you committed offences which were simply terrifying for the victim.
They were of a violent and sexual nature.
You selected a vulnerable victim, a 13-year-old boy, walking home on his own, and you armed yourself with a knife in order to do it.
And then at knifepoint, with that little boy crying, you led him into the bushes and committed serious sexual offences against him.” Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Paul Kenyon of Leicestershire Police commented on the case, expressing skepticism about Hope's potential for early release.
“Jason Hope’s got to do an awful lot whilst in prison to be able to get out in four years’ time.
And I think the likelihood is that he won’t be out in four years, but obviously we’ll have to wait and see,” he said, underscoring the seriousness of Hope’s crimes and the challenges ahead for rehabilitation or early parole.
