JASON HASLAM SENTENCED IN WASHINGTON FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In January 2001, Jason Haslam, a 27-year-old man residing in Washington, was sentenced to nine months in prison after being convicted of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the offense and the circumstances surrounding it.According to court reports, Haslam, who is married and a father of two, deliberately seduced a 13-year-old girl at his residence on two separate occasions earlier that year. These encounters took place while his wife was away from home, which allowed Haslam to carry out his actions without immediate suspicion. The court heard that the young girl, feeling ashamed of what had transpired, initially kept her ordeal secret. However, she later confided in a schoolmate, revealing her fears that she might be pregnant as a result of the encounters.
School officials, upon learning of the girl’s confession, promptly contacted the police. Following the investigation, Haslam was arrested and subsequently admitted to two charges of unlawful sexual intercourse. Despite the serious nature of his actions, reports indicated that his wife remained supportive and stood by him throughout the proceedings.
During the court hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, the defense attorney, John Wilkinson, described the incident as “not one, but two moments of madness,” emphasizing that Haslam would likely regret these actions for the rest of his life. Wilkinson also mentioned that Haslam, who is part of the Territorial Army, claimed the girl was 14 years old during both encounters. However, prosecutors maintained that the girl was only 13 during the first incident and had turned 14 by the second.
Judge Tim Hewitt sentenced Haslam to nine months in prison, with an additional one-year period of extended supervision following his release. The court also mandated that Haslam be registered as a sex offender for a decade. In his sentencing remarks, Judge Hewitt highlighted the disturbing nature of the case, stating, “You were clearly able to influence her since she obviously had some affection for you. You were able to do that because of your age and personality and you were able to overcome her natural instinct of resistance.” The judge further emphasized the gravity of the offense, noting that Haslam, at 27, was a man in a position of responsibility and trust, unlike a younger individual involved in a similar relationship at school.
