JASON EVANS SENTENCED IN SWANSEA FOR GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG BOY

A man named Jason Evans groomed and sexually abused a vulnerable young boy, Swansea Crown Court heard.

Evans, aged 45 and residing on Morfydd Street, Morriston, Swansea, was convicted of three counts of sexual assault and two counts of rape after a trial.

The court was told that Evans manipulated the boy, who was under 12 at the time, by giving him gifts such as sweets, toys, and rugby boots.

He then subjected the child to repeated sexual assaults and rapes during the 2000s.

The victim did not feel able to report the abuse at the time.

It was only in recent years—after becoming a father—that he decided to go to the police.

Prosecutor John Hipkin QC read a statement from the victim, describing how the abuse impacted his life.

He said, "The sexual assaults made me an aggressive boy who got into trouble at school, and I eventually left education with no qualifications." The victim also revealed that he struggled with alcohol and drugs, had difficulty controlling his emotions, and encountered troubles with law enforcement.

He described suffering from flashbacks, regular suicidal thoughts, and difficulty maintaining employment, but noted that his family had supported him through the "dark times." He expressed hope that Evans' conviction would mark a beginning of his recovery, saying, "I hope Jason Evans being found guilty will be the start of my recovery but my life will never be the same, it will always live with me...

I hope it will be the first step in me getting on with my life." During the trial, Evans maintained his innocence.

Stephen Rees, representing him, stated that Evans had led an active life and had since formed a stable relationship and become a father.

Rees said, "The defendant had led an industrious life and since the offending has gone on to form a stable relationship and become a father." The court was also told that the offending was out of character, as Evans had not committed such acts before or after.

The court’s recorder, Mark Powell QC, condemned Evans for exploiting his victim’s vulnerability to satisfy his perverted desires.

He said that Evans had "destroyed the boy's formative years" and "took away his youth." The impact on the victim was evident not only from the statement read aloud but also from the distressed state in which he gave evidence while in the dock.

Considering the severity of the case, Recorder Powell described Evans as an offender of particular concern and sentenced him to an extended prison term of 13 years—comprising 12 years in custody and an additional one-year licence period.

Evans is eligible to apply for parole after serving two-thirds of the custodial sentence, though release will depend on a Parole Board assessment.

Additionally, Evans was placed under an indefinite sexual harm prevention order restricting his access to children and will remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Following sentencing, South Wales Police detective inspector Carl Price emphasized the importance of reporting sexual offences.

He said, "Reporting rape or a serious sexual offence is a big decision to make, but victims’ welfare is our priority.

Don't forget both men and women can be offenders and victims of sexual assault." He continued, "South Wales Police is committed to investigating such offences to help victims move forward and ensure offenders are brought to justice.

If you or someone you know has been raped or sexually assaulted, we encourage you to report it so you can get the support you need."
