Bury Rapist
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Bury, Jason Bursk, aged 51, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences committed over a span of several years. The crimes, which include attempted rape, sexual assault, and trespassing with intent to commit sexual offences, took place across various locations in Bury and Manchester, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.

According to court proceedings, Bursk, a father of three and a resident of Radcliffe in Bury, engaged in a series of invasive and violent acts targeting vulnerable women and young girls. His offending history dates back to January 2012, with the most recent incident occurring in November 2019. The court heard that Bursk would often stalk his victims by peering into gardens and windows, and would try doors late at night, seeking opportunities to commit his crimes.

The most heinous of his offences occurred in the early hours of November 15, when he broke into a home through the back door. Inside, he sexually assaulted a young girl who was sleeping in her bedroom alongside her younger sister. The court was shown CCTV footage capturing Bursk pulling up his trousers and fleeing the scene after being disturbed by the sister, who woke up and tried to push him away. The brave sister’s intervention prevented further harm, but the trauma inflicted on the young girl was profound, with both children suffering significant emotional and psychological effects.

Another victim, an elderly woman in her late 70s, was assaulted in her own home after Bursk gained entry. She awoke to find him in her bedroom after he had turned off the lights. The court heard that he pinned her down and covered her mouth when she screamed, but she managed to kick him away, causing him to flee. The assault had a devastating impact on her health, both physically and mentally, and her family described their feelings of disgust and helplessness in the face of such violence.

Further investigations revealed that Bursk’s modus operandi involved targeting homes after a night out, often drinking in Manchester city centre before returning to Radcliffe to commit his offences. CCTV footage played a crucial role in his conviction, showing him in various stages of his predatory activities, including attempting to break into homes and fleeing the scene after committing assaults.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was the revelation that a young woman, who recognized Bursk from a media appeal, came forward to disclose that he had sexually abused her when she was just a child in 2012. This added to the evidence against him and underscored the long history of his offending.

During the sentencing hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester, Judge John Potter described Bursk as a “deviant sexual predator” and emphasized that there was no justification for his wicked and depraved actions. The judge acknowledged the bravery of the victims, particularly the young girl and her sister, who intervened to stop him. Bursk pleaded guilty to 11 charges, including attempted rape, sexual assault, and trespass, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, with an additional five years on extended licence. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and classified as a dangerous offender, meaning he must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for parole.

In addition to the prison sentence, Bursk was subjected to a lifelong order on the sex offenders register. The court also released CCTV footage to the public, including images of him walking shortly before the attack in Radcliffe, drinking in Manchester, and attempting to break into a home in 2019, which helped to illustrate the extent of his predatory behavior.

Throughout the proceedings, Bursk’s defense argued that his offending was linked to alcohol consumption and past traumatic experiences, including abuse suffered during his childhood and military service in Israel. His wife and children, who have stood by him, expressed their belief that his issues could be addressed and that he remains a good father and husband despite his crimes. However, the court made it clear that his actions were inexcusable and caused irreparable harm to his victims, emphasizing the importance of justice and community safety.
