JASON BROWN FROM BOROUGHBRIDGE SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In March 2008, Jason Brown, a part-time DJ residing in Boroughbridge, was sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of possessing and downloading a significant number of indecent images of children. The case came to light when Brown left behind a collection of compact discs containing incriminating evidence upon vacating his rented residence at The Chase in Boroughbridge.

Brown's landlord discovered the discs placed on top of his wardrobe and promptly alerted the police, leading to an investigation into his activities. During a search of Brown's property, authorities uncovered a total of 151 indecent photographs. Prosecutor Geraldine Kelly explained to York Crown Court that approximately two-thirds of these images were classified as 'Level One,' indicating the lowest degree of indecency on a scale from one to five. The remaining images fell into higher categories of indecency, suggesting a progression in the severity of the material.

In addition to the still images, law enforcement officials found 14 video clips depicting children. These clips were categorized based on their level of indecency, with two at level four, six at level three, five at level two, and one at level one. Miss Kelly stated that the children depicted ranged in age from six to thirteen years old, highlighting the disturbing nature of the material.

Jason Brown, aged 35, pleaded guilty to 17 charges related to the possession and distribution of child pornography, with offenses spanning from February 2005 to August 2006. Sixteen of these charges involved downloading still images, while one concerned the collection of video clips. The court heard that Brown's actions were not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of offending.

Judge Stephen Ashurst, presiding over the case, emphasized the seriousness of the crimes and the importance of deterring such behavior. He stated that it was his duty to send a clear message that individuals involved in downloading such 'disgusting' material faced the possibility of imprisonment. An examination of Brown's laptop revealed the websites he had visited, providing further evidence of his activities. Additionally, police discovered that Brown had taken photographs of schoolgirls using a mobile phone camera. During questioning, Brown admitted that he had been abused as a child and claimed his curiosity about child pornography stemmed from that experience. He also stated that he had taken photos of schoolgirls for amusement and to compare their uniforms with his own childhood attire.

Mitigating the case, defense lawyer Andrew Lees explained that Brown had moved from Knaresborough due to media attention surrounding the case. He revealed that Brown had lived in his car for five days without informing authorities, fearing his bail might be revoked. Lees described Brown as having endured 'abuse of all kinds' during his difficult upbringing, but also noted that he had made efforts to improve his life.

Brown was employed as a laborer and supplemented his income by working as a DJ. However, due to the court proceedings, he lost his job. Despite this setback, he expressed hope of accepting a new employment opportunity in London. After reviewing pre-sentence reports, Judge Ashurst remarked that Brown appeared to be 'in denial' about the severity of his crimes and had shown little remorse for his actions, underscoring the gravity of the case and the need for appropriate punishment.
