GOSPORT GRANDMOTHER JANET ROBINSON ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND BESTIALITY PICTURES
In a case that has shocked the community of Gosport, 49-year-old Janet Robinson was found to possess a disturbing collection of child abuse and bestiality images, yet she narrowly avoided imprisonment. The investigation began when police executed a search warrant at her residence on Prideaux Brune Avenue, Gosport, after discovering incriminating chat logs on computers linked to a paedophile rape gang that had been jailed the previous year.During the raid, officers uncovered a horrifying array of images on Robinson’s devices, including graphic photographs depicting the abuse of a six-month-old infant. The images were part of a larger collection that revealed her disturbing interests, which included a video involving bestiality with a girl estimated to be between 12 and 13 years old. The discovery was made amid an investigation into a network of male offenders, with Robinson’s online activity coming under scrutiny.
Prosecutor Matthew Lawson explained that Robinson had engaged in conversations with men via Skype and Yahoo, during which she displayed one of the abusive images to another online user. The police investigation was triggered when one of the male suspects, who was in contact with Robinson over Skype, was arrested and found to be communicating with her. When officers arrived at her home on June 15 of the previous year, Robinson immediately admitted her identity as the user of the Skype account and cooperated with authorities.
Further examination of her computers revealed a disturbing collection of indecent images, including 33 photographs of bestiality. The chat logs uncovered discussions about her desire to participate in child sexual abuse and acts of bestiality, with Robinson even holding up an image of abuse during an online conversation. Although she did not download or share the image directly, she provided advice to others on how to search for such material covertly using specific search engines to avoid detection.
Robinson’s full cooperation with police included admitting to performing a sex act with a dog, although she pleaded not guilty to the charge of intercourse with an animal. Her legal case was further complicated by her prior guilty plea in May 2016 to possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornography, which included a movie of a woman engaging in sexual intercourse with a dog. The images ranged from Category A to Category C, with the most serious being a film rated as Category A, along with numerous still images at various levels of severity.
At Portsmouth Crown Court, Judge Linda Sullivan QC acknowledged the gravity of the charges but noted that Robinson had pleaded guilty to possession of indecent images and extreme pornography, while the charge of bestiality involving intercourse with a dog was not pursued further, with the court recording a not guilty verdict on that count. The court heard that the images and the movie spanned a period from April 2006 to June 2015, with the majority of the indecent images being collected between January 2010 and June 2015.
In sentencing, Judge Ian Pearson described the case as “unusual and very depressing,” emphasizing the disturbing nature of the offences. He pointed out that Robinson was considered to be on the periphery of a larger paedophile network, which had been active across the country. Despite the severity of her online activities, the judge decided to impose a suspended sentence, handing her a 16-month term for the child abuse images and a four-month concurrent sentence for the bestiality images, both suspended for two years. Additionally, Robinson was placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years, banned from contacting children under 16, and prohibited from owning a dog for the same period.
She was also ordered to complete 50 days of rehabilitation activities and pay £350 in prosecution costs. Her electronic devices will be confiscated and the images destroyed. The court’s decision reflects a recognition of her cooperation and the fact that she was on the periphery of a larger criminal network, but her community’s reaction has been one of rejection and shame since her admission of guilt last month.
