CORONAVIRUS SURVIVOR PLEADS GUILTY TO ATTACK ON PARTNER AFTER LIFE ON LIFE SUPPORT

A coronavirus survivor who spent time on life support kicked his partner repeatedly as she lay in the road.

Strouther, 30, of Tideswell Court, Mansfield, attacked her after they went out drinking in Mansfield town centre.

A member of the public saw the pair in the middle of the street exchanging heated words.

The woman's next recollection was lying in the middle of the road being kicked by the defendant and curling herself up.

He kicked her between the legs as he called her abusive names.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday, August 27, Strouther pleaded guilty to assault and causing bodily harm to the woman, who had known him for about two years.

A victim impact revealed she has constant headaches and is "a nervous wreck" and "anxious all the time".

"She believed it has all been caused as a result of what happened," added Mr.

Short.

The woman suppresses her emotions and has to keep herself busy and, when she stops being busy, it all comes flooding back and hits her, in her words, "like a ton of bricks." Strouther, who listened on a video link to the courtroom from HMP Nottingham, read out a letter to the judge, expressing his remorse and how he suffered with Covid-19.

He said he was "put on life support in King's Mill Hospital (Sutton-in-Ashfield)" and came out of hospital and "it deeply affected me" and he could no find work.

He relapsed into drink and drugs and "spiralled out of control".

He also revealed he spent most of his teens and twenties in custody and is now on a number of medications and feeling better in himself.

The court heard about his criminal past; ranging from racially aggravated threatening behaviour, common assault involving punching and strangulation, to violent behaviour in a police station.

Judge Julie Warburton sentenced him to 15 months for the latest assault consecutive to three months for a breach of a suspended prison sentence.

An indefinite restraining order was imposed to stay away from the victim.
