Scunthorpe Sexual Abuser
In September 2017, Jamie Speroni, a 27-year-old chef from Bottesford Avenue, Scunthorpe, was involved in a sexual assault incident involving a teenage girl. The court heard that Speroni entered the girl’s bed after a party at a hotel and ignored her explicit request not to engage in any "funny business" if he stayed the night.
Prosecutor Jeremy Evans told Sheffield Crown Court that at the time, Speroni was employed as a sous chef at a hotel near Brigg, where a staff party was held. Accommodation was arranged for attendees so that they would not have to drive home.
According to the court, Speroni made romantic advances toward a 17-year-old girl after both had been drinking, but she rebuffed his advances and went to her own room for the night. Speroni later entered her room with two other guests, including his roommate. He then got into her bed, dressed only in his boxer shorts, and encouraged her to join him, which she declined and asked him to leave.
Despite her protests and a warning not to try any "funny business," Speroni later began pushing himself against her and attempted to engage in sexual activity. The girl reacted by jumping out of bed and demanding Speroni leave her room. He exited, somewhat indignant, and she returned to sleep.
Speroni later sent a Facebook message apologising for his actions, citing alcohol consumption but suggesting that both parties were partly to blame. The girl expressed that she was uncomfortable with what had happened.
Following the incident, Speroni was dismissed from his job, and the girl later reported the matter to police. The case was scheduled for trial, but Speroni pleaded guilty on the first day.
Mr. Evans highlighted the impact on the girl, now 19, who experienced academic difficulties, including failing her A-levels. He noted she was relieved she did not have to testify at trial.
Judge Paul Watson QC stated that he did not believe Speroni misinterpreted the signals from the girl. Speroni was sentenced to a one-year suspended prison term, ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work, and pay £500 in costs. Additionally, he must register as a sex offender for 10 years.
