During the court proceedings, Morrison confided in his probation officer, who was tasked with monitoring him under community supervision, that this officer was his 'only friend'.
This candid admission came as Morrison expressed feelings of betrayal, stating that he felt he had been let down by the officer, who was responsible for overseeing his compliance with the law.
The court was told that this sentiment underscored Morrison’s profound social loneliness and difficulty establishing meaningful relationships outside the criminal justice system.
The case came to a head after police investigations revealed that Morrison had been engaging in illegal activities involving child exploitation material.
Authorities received an anonymous tip in April indicating that Morrison had been viewing indecent images of children.
Acting promptly, officers from Thames Valley Police’s public protection unit visited Morrison’s residence on April 11.
Their visit confirmed the tip’s accuracy: they discovered that Morrison had not only been viewing but also distributing illegal images.
Further investigations uncovered disturbing online interactions.
Morrison believed he was communicating with a nine-year-old girl, but it later emerged that the 'child' was actually an adult from Denmark pretending to be a minor in an online chat.
Morrison’s attempts at sexual communication with the supposed child heightened the severity of his offense.
Morrison, who resides on Luther Street in Oxford, pleaded guilty at earlier hearings to multiple charges, including breaching a sexual harm prevention order, creating and sharing indecent images, and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor.
His criminal background is extensive, with numerous previous convictions related to viewing indecent images of children online.
The prosecutor highlighted the seriousness of his record and the ongoing threat he poses.
In sentencing him on January 27, Judge Ian Pringle KC, who had previously incarcerated Morrison in 2017, described his criminal history as 'unenviable' and emphasized the danger he represents.
The judge imposed an extended sentence totaling five years, which includes an immediate custody period of 46 months followed by a 14-month extension on license, under supervision of the probation service.
Morrison is required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence behind bars before being considered for release, but he remains liable for recall at any time, potentially serving the full duration in prison.
Defense counsel Kellie Enever offered mitigating circumstances, pointing out Morrison’s intellectual difficulties and low IQ, which had made social interactions challenging for him.
Morrison himself remarked that his emotions did not feel as intense as those of others and explained that during his teenage years, he found it easier to communicate with younger children rather than his peers, which she connected to his cognitive profile.
This case underscores the gravity of child sex offenses and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and harm in Oxford and beyond.
