JAMIE MOBBS SENTENCED IN OXFORD FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN BANBURY
Jamie Mobbs, 27, from Banbury, was involved in a disturbing online grooming case that led to his sentencing in Oxford.Mobbs claimed he was feeling lonely and was actively seeking a girlfriend.
He engaged in conversations with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl on Facebook and Instagram, openly sharing his real name, age, and occupation as a factory cleaner.
During these exchanges, Mobbs’s chat quickly shifted to explicit topics.
He asked the girl to send images of herself in her school uniform and underwear, and he also sent pornographic images himself.
He continued with sexually explicit messages, offering to pay her £500 to cuddle, kiss, and perform oral sex, and even showed a willingness to meet her in person.
Mobbs sent three videos of himself performing sexual acts and discussed coming to Watford to have sex, sending a Google Maps link to demonstrate how long the journey would take.
The conversation was initiated on February 6, 2020, by Mobbs.
The individual he was chatting with was a decoy account operated by a paedophile hunter vigilante group.
The prosecution stated that Mobbs asked for a photograph of the girl in her school uniform and requested explicit images throughout the day.
On February 9, Mobbs was confronted at his home in Banbury by members of the vigilante group, prompting police involvement.
During his interview, he claimed he was trying to explain “how relationships work” and described his sexual videos as “more educational.” Police found no indecent images of children on his phone but discovered he had searched for terms like “how old do you have to be to wear a thong.” Judge Michael Gledhill QC sentenced Mobbs to two years in prison, suspended for two years.
The judge expressed strong disapproval, stating, “You are a rather pathetic character who lives a very lonely, isolated life.
You may very well want a normal life and to meet somebody to have a proper relationship with and I fully understand that.
You do not go about that by seeking out 13-year-old girls,” he said.
Mitigating for Moodbs, his solicitor Gordanna Austin highlighted that he had learning difficulties, including autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, which she said would make immediate imprisonment particularly difficult for him.
She also emphasized his remorse and noted that Mobbs had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.
Mobbs, residing on School View, Banbury, admitted multiple charges: attempted sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity, attempted sexual activity in the presence of a child, and attempting to arrange a child sex offence.
He had no previous convictions.
In addition to the suspended sentence, Mobbs was ordered to pay costs of £1,000, complete up to 50 rehabilitative days, and adhere to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
He is also required to register as a sex offender for a decade.
