A teenager from Shetland, 17-year-old Jamie Leask, has been found guilty of numerous sexual offenses against children as young as seven. The conviction came after a week-long trial held at the High Court in Aberdeen. During the announcement of the verdict, Leask, who appeared emotional and cried, was remanded into custody and will be added to the sex offenders' register.
The offenses took place over an 18-month period in Lerwick, and Leask will be sentenced in Edinburgh next month. The victims were compelled to testify against him, some giving evidence via video link, after Leask denied all charges.
The court heard that Leask had sex with two different nine-year-old boys on separate occasions and compelled them to perform sex acts on him. He also forced two young boys, aged seven and nine, to engage in sexual activity and perform lewd acts on each other. These incidents occurred at Seafield Park in Lerwick between July 5 and August 23 last year — during a period when he was already on bail for earlier allegations involving young girls.
However, charges of rape against two girls, aged 13 and 14, near a bomb shelter at 'The Knab' — a coastal walk area in Lerwick — were dropped. Instead, Leask was convicted of engaging in underage sex with the schoolgirls.
The jury was told that Leask had sex with the 13-year-old girl on Valentine's Day and taunted her about being pregnant with his child. He also ordered the 14-year-old girl, who was his friend's girlfriend, to strip and then had sex with her while his friend watched.
Leask, previously employed as a supermarket check-out operator, committed these initial offenses while still attending school. He has been in custody since November, and his sentencing has been deferred to the Edinburgh High Court for background reports, scheduled for May 23.
Lord Turnbull addressed the jury, stating: 'The nature of this case, involving evidence from children, has made it a demanding and unpleasant one.'
