SUNDERLAND PAEDOPHILE JAMIE COLLINS SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS FOR ABUSE AND GROOMING

In October 2018, a disturbing case involving a Sunderland man named Jamie Collins captured public attention due to the serious nature of his crimes against a young girl.

Collins, a 31-year-old resident of Bramwell Road in Sunderland, was convicted of multiple sexual offenses involving a girl under the age of 13, leading to his imprisonment for eight years at Durham Crown Court.

Collins admitted to six counts of sexual assault and three counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

The court was informed that all these offenses involved the same young girl, whose innocence was profoundly violated by Collins’s actions.

In addition to these charges, Collins pleaded guilty to voyeurism and the production of indecent images of a child.

The evidence presented revealed that Collins had molested the girl, placing her hand on his private parts, and had also filmed her on his mobile phone without her consent.

Further investigations uncovered that Collins possessed four indecent images of children, which were unrelated to the victim involved in the other offenses.

Despite admitting to his crimes, Collins later changed his legal representation and attempted to retract his guilty pleas.

This move was met with rejection by the court, as it was deemed to cause unnecessary emotional distress to the victim.

Mrs Justice Cutts, presiding over the case, emphasized that Collins’s attempt to withdraw his pleas resulted in a “roller coaster of emotion and prolonged agony” for the young girl.

Throughout the proceedings, Collins continued to deny his guilt when speaking to a probation officer, instead choosing to blame the victim for the abuse.

His legal team argued that the length of his sentence was excessively harsh, citing his previous good character and asserting that he deserved some credit for his early guilty pleas.

They highlighted that Collins had built a successful computer business from scratch, which they claimed demonstrated his positive qualities and potential for rehabilitation.

Mrs Justice Cutts acknowledged these points but ultimately upheld the sentence, reducing it slightly from eight years to seven-and-a-half years on appeal.

The court’s decision reflected a balance between the severity of Collins’s crimes and the mitigating factors presented by his legal representatives.

In a related case from June 2018, Collins was also convicted of grooming and abusing another underage girl in Sunderland.

During that incident, Collins told the girl he was “her man” and engaged in sexual misconduct over a period of three months.

He also secretly filmed her leaving the shower, an act that further compounded the gravity of his offenses.

When the girl discovered the footage on his phone, she confronted Collins, who dismissed her concerns by claiming he was “just messing about.” Prosecutor Jane Waugh revealed that following Collins’s arrest, police found indecent images of other children on his home computer and uncovered searches related to voyeurism.

Initially denying his involvement, Collins changed his plea to admit nine counts of sexual assault or causing a child to engage in sexual activity, along with charges of voyeurism and making indecent images.

However, he later dismissed his legal team and attempted to withdraw his guilty pleas, a move that was rejected by the court in Carlisle last month.

The impact of Collins’s actions on the victims was profound, with reports indicating that the girl’s school performance and exam results had suffered significantly.

Judge Christopher Prince sentenced Collins to eight years in prison, emphasizing that his attempt to vacate his earlier pleas had prolonged the victim’s suffering.

As part of his sentence, Collins was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order until further notice, underscoring the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
