SUNDERLAND PAIR JAMES AND LEE DORWARD CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Sunderland, a father and son duo, James and Lee Dorward, were found to be in possession of separate collections of indecent images involving children. The incident came to light after police executed a search warrant at their shared residence on Franklin Street in Sunderland on January 26, 2016.
During the raid, authorities seized multiple computers and hard drives from the property, which were subsequently subjected to detailed forensic analysis.
The investigation uncovered a disturbing array of illicit material stored on their devices, with the images and videos involving minors as young as eight years old.
The severity of the content was classified into different categories, with some of the material falling into the most serious category, Category A, which depicts penetrative sexual acts.
On the hard drives belonging to James Dorward, aged 63, police discovered 17 moving images of the most serious nature involving young girls aged between eight and 12.
Meanwhile, on the devices belonging to his son Lee, aged 37, investigators found 25 moving images featuring boys aged between 10 and 16.
Of these, 19 were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe form of abuse depicted in the material.
Both men, residents of Sunderland, appeared before Newcastle Crown Court to face charges related to their possession and creation of indecent images.
They pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including making and possessing such material.
The court heard that James Dorward had been collecting these illicit images over a period spanning from 2006 to 2012, while Lee had downloaded his collection in June 2015.
Prosecutor Penny Bottomley detailed the case, stating, “On January 26, 2016, a search warrant was executed at the residence of James and Lee Dorward in Sunderland.
The police seized various computers and hard drives, which were then examined forensically.” She further explained that the forensic analysis revealed 17 Category A images on James’s devices, while Lee’s devices contained 19 Category A images, along with five Category B and one Category C images.
Additionally, police uncovered evidence of “sexual chat” conversations between Lee and other adult internet users, with profiles named “Tight and Shiney” and “Tight and Young.” In court, Recorder Richard Woolfall addressed the defendants, emphasizing the gravity of their actions.
“This is perhaps a sad day for father and son to be both in the dock together having committed such serious offences,” he said.
“It may not have been apparent to you at the time, but real children are sexually abused to satisfy people with interests such as yours who enjoy viewing this depraved material.
You may have thought that you were so far removed from it that there was perhaps no harm in it.
But, may I tell you now, real children are sexually abused, and they have to live with that, which often destroys their lives.” Both James and Lee Dorward faced significant legal consequences.
They were sentenced to three-year community orders and were ordered to participate in sex offender group work programs.
Furthermore, they are required to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years and are subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same duration.
The court’s ruling underscores the seriousness with which such offences are regarded and the ongoing efforts to protect children from exploitation and abuse.
