Darlington Domestic Abuser Sexual Abuser
A man from Darlington, James Stubbs, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after being found guilty of subjecting a woman to prolonged physical and psychological abuse. The case, which drew significant attention from local authorities, revealed a pattern of controlling and violent behavior that severely impacted the victim's life.

Stubbs, aged 24, systematically restricted the woman’s freedom, refusing to allow her to leave his residence in Darlington. He deliberately damaged her phone and clothing, effectively preventing her from going out or maintaining contact with her family and friends. His actions created an environment of constant fear and isolation for the woman, who was subjected to both verbal and physical assaults. The abuse extended into sexual violence, with Stubbs forcing her into painful acts under the guise of checking whether she was seeing other men.

The woman described her experience as living in a state of perpetual anxiety, walking on eggshells, and fearing for her life. She recounted that Stubbs had made her believe that any misstep could result in her death, often explaining how he would carry out such acts and evade detection. Her testimony revealed that she was in a constant state of terror, contemplating writing farewell letters to her loved ones in case Stubbs ever decided to kill her.

Following an investigation by Durham Constabulary, Stubbs was arrested and charged with multiple offenses. He admitted to controlling and coercive behavior, as well as assault, but denied two counts of assault by penetration. Despite his denial, a jury convicted him of both sexual assault charges after a trial. On January 8, at Teesside Crown Court, Stubbs was formally sentenced to ten years in prison for his crimes.

In addition to his imprisonment, Stubbs was issued a restraining order that prohibits him from making any contact with the victim. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his offenses.

PC Samantha Geraghty, a member of the Darlington Safeguarding Team who led the investigation, expressed her condemnation of Stubbs’ conduct. She emphasized the devastating impact of his actions on the victim and her family, stating, “Stubbs’ behaviour was utterly appalling and left a young woman fearing for her life. I hope that this sentence sends a strong message that controlling and coercive behaviour will not be tolerated and that we will do everything in our power to help those who are suffering. If you are suffering abuse, please know you are not alone – there are people who can and will help you.”

Authorities encourage anyone experiencing similar abuse to seek help by calling 101 or 999 if in immediate danger, reaffirming their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals from such heinous acts.
