JAMES SILVERS FROM CLOWNE ABANDONS DOGS IN CRAMPED CRATES FOR DAYS

James Silvers, a resident of Clowne, was found guilty of neglecting his two bull terriers, Lola and Blue, by leaving them confined in small crates for an extended period without access to food or water.

The incident drew significant concern from members of the public, prompting an investigation by the RSPCA and local police authorities.

According to reports, Silvers, born around 1996 and formerly residing on Hickinwood Crescent in Clowne, had left his dogs in what were described as 'prison cell'-like crates while he was away.

The dogs endured these harsh conditions for approximately four days, confined in crates that were just large enough for them to stand upright, but offering no space for movement or comfort.

The crates contained only dry, bone-like bowls and were surrounded by urine-soaked rags and feces, indicating a neglectful environment that failed to meet the basic needs of the animals.

Inspector Rachel Leafe, who responded to the scene at the property on New Street, Pilsley, detailed the distressing scene.

She explained, “There were two crates, one on top of the other, with one dog in each.

These weren’t big crates either – they were big enough for them to stand up, but that was all.

There was no food or water in the crates, just empty bowls which were bone dry, and they just had rags sodden with urine to lie on.

There was also faeces around the edges of the crates.” One of the dogs, Blue, was found to be a banned breed under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Despite Blue surviving the ordeal, he was ultimately euthanized by Derbyshire Police after being identified as a prohibited breed.

The other dog, Lola, a Staffordshire bull terrier, was rescued and subsequently rehomed.

The RSPCA took custody of both animals and provided care following their rescue.

Silvers’ history of animal neglect was evident, as he had previously been banned from keeping animals for five years, a restriction that expired in August 2022.

His sentencing included a nine-month community order, a fine totaling £205, and charges related to animal neglect.

The police and RSPCA expressed their disappointment over the tragic outcome for Blue, emphasizing that they do not support breed-specific legislation and have been advocating for legislative changes.

Inspector Leafe reflected on the case, stating, “This is a very sad ending as we were hoping to see Blue into a new home.

The RSPCA do not make these decisions.

We do not agree with Breed Specific Legislation and have been campaigning for changes for some time.”
