JAMES RUMNEY AND SHOCKING RAPE IN WILTSHIRE
A man from Wiltshire, James Rumney, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of rape. The assault took place in September 2020 and involved a woman whom Rumney met during a night out with friends.
During that evening, Rumney, who resides in Poulton Hill, Marlborough, was out with a group of friends when he encountered the female victim.
The two eventually continued their evening together at the home of one of Rumney's friends.
Initially, their interaction was consensual, and they engaged in sexual activity.
However, the situation escalated when Rumney began to demand additional sex, despite the victim’s clear lack of consent.
According to reports, Rumney forcibly assaulted the woman, raping her twice during the encounter.
The victim was described as being terrified and distressed during the ordeal.
She managed to extract herself from the bedroom where the assaults took place and left to escape from Rumney.
The entire incident left her deeply traumatized.
Following the incident, the woman chose to report the matter to the authorities.
Her courage and willingness to come forward were highly praised by both the police and the judge at her trial.
Rumney's case was heard at Swindon Crown Court, where a jury unanimously convicted the 29-year-old of both counts of rape last month.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge James Townsend emphasized that there was no basis to consider the initial sexual encounter as consensual, dismissing any potential mitigating factors.
He highlighted the severe impact that Rumney’s actions had on the victim, praising her strength in revealing the trauma she experienced and enduring the ordeal of giving evidence.
Detective Constable Sally Booth from Wiltshire Police commented on the case, underscoring how a seemingly typical scenario—where a man and woman meet during a night out and engage in consensual sex—can swiftly turn into a serious sexual assault.
She elaborated that the victim had repeatedly asked Rumney to stop, but he refused and continued to force himself upon her, at times treating her as if she were an inanimate object.
Officer Booth highlighted the immense bravery it took for the victim to escape and report the assault, noting that situations where consent is initially given but later revoked are not uncommon.
However, she warned victims that they should not feel ashamed or afraid to come forward, stressing that they will be believed and supported by specially trained officers.
She concluded her statement by thanking the victim for her courage and underlined the importance of reporting such crimes, which ultimately led to Rumney’s conviction and imprisonment.
Rumney will also be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life once released from prison.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact sexual assaults have and the importance of supporting victims throughout their journey to seek justice.
