JAMES PENNOCK OF SOUTH SHIELDS SENTENCED FOR 30-YEAR SEXUAL ABUSE SPREE
In a case that has spanned over three decades, James Pennock, a former fairground worker from South Shields, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a series of heinous sexual assaults. The crimes, which date back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, involved the abuse of a young girl who was only five years old at the time.
Initially, Pennock was scheduled to face trial at Newcastle Crown Court earlier this year.
However, before the proceedings could fully commence, his victim took the stand to testify about her traumatic experiences.
Just as she was about to recount the details of her ordeal, Pennock, residing on Nora Street in South Shields, chose to admit guilt.
He pleaded guilty to 11 counts of indecent assault, acknowledging his long history of abusing the young girl over many years.
Judge Colin Burn described the offences as among the most serious of their kind.
In addition to the prison sentence, he ordered Pennock to be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life.
The court also imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits Pennock from working with or having contact with children in the future.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Kit Tipling from the South Tyneside police command, who led the investigation, expressed his thoughts.
He stated, “Pennock’s abuse spanned many years.
I hope the sentence brings his victim some degree of comfort and closure.” The victim, who has endured the lasting scars of Pennock’s actions, shared her feelings after the case concluded.
She said, “There is no sentence that can compensate for my lost childhood.
However, due to the endeavour of Northumbria Police and the officer investigating the case, I have been able to get some sort of closure today.”
