JAMES PATERSON OF MANCHESTER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULTS INVOLVING VICTIMS IN DIDSBURY AND WILMSLOW
James Paterson, born on July 4, 1992, and residing in Cheadle, Stockport, was recently convicted of multiple serious sexual offences at Bolton Crown Court. The court found him guilty of two counts of sexual assault by penetration and three counts of sexual assault, all involving three different victims.
These incidents occurred in the Manchester area, specifically during events in Didsbury and Wilmslow, in the year 2019.
Following the verdict, Paterson was sentenced on Thursday, July 11, 2024, to a prison term of ten years.
Under the terms of his sentence, he is required to serve at least two-thirds of this period before being eligible for parole or release.
In addition to his prison sentence, Paterson received an extra three years on license, meaning he will be under supervision upon release.
He has also been placed on the sex offender register for life, a measure that ensures ongoing monitoring and management of his conduct.
Furthermore, the court imposed lifetime restraining orders to prevent him from contacting or approaching the victims, safeguarding their well-being.
The offences took place during social events organized by the company where Paterson and the victims were employed.
The company, based in Didsbury, South Manchester, often arranged after-hours social gatherings to foster team spirit among employees.
It was during one such event in June 2019 that the first incident occurred.
After a night out in Manchester’s city centre, the group returned to a flat to continue celebrating.
During this time, one of the victims was subjected to non-consensual sexual penetration and was later touched inappropriately despite her clear refusals.
She confided in a friend and colleague later that day, and the incident was reported to her workplace authorities.
Several months later, in September 2019, another social event was held in Didsbury.
Paterson offered to give a colleague a lift home, which she accepted.
However, once at her residence, Paterson made further unwanted advances.
She rejected his advances, but later that morning, she awoke to find him crouched beside her bed and then on top of her, again engaging in non-consensual sexual activity.
She reported this incident to her employer, which eventually led to a formal investigation.
The case was handed over to police, and in June 2020, following a thorough investigation, Paterson was arrested.
He initially denied the allegations.
Another disturbing incident occurred in Wilmslow in July 2020.
After a social gathering, the victims and Paterson retired to separate rooms.
The victim woke up to find herself being touched inappropriately beneath her clothes.
Horrified, she ran downstairs to alert a friend.
Once confronted, Paterson left the scene.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the victim and her friends reported the incident to the police, prompting further inquiries and safeguarding measures.
The investigation confirmed the allegations, leading to Paterson’s conviction in court and his subsequent sentencing.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Paterson maintained his innocence, but the evidence presented was sufficient for a conviction.
The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his actions and the importance of protecting victims from sexual violence.
The case highlights the need for vigilance and support for victims of such offences, especially in workplace and social settings within the Manchester area.
