YORK PENSIONER CAUGHT WITH INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN
A pensioner named James Middleton, aged 76, was found by police to have five indecent images of children on his laptop.
Middleton had never been in trouble with the law before.
Prosecuting lawyer Kathryn Walters stated that the images found were three of the worst category and one each of the middle and least serious categories.
Middleton pleaded guilty to three charges of having indecent images of children.
During the court hearing, York’s district judge, Adrian Lower, emphasized that Middleton's case involved images retrieved via the internet, and he had searched for such images, indicating a sexual interest in children.
The judge noted that prison sentences would likely be short and ineffective due to current conditions, so he opted for a community order, which includes a two-year community sentence, 40 days of rehabilitative activities, a £200 fine, and a five-year registration on the sex offenders’ register.
Middleton was also ordered to pay a surcharge and prosecution costs, and the laptop was confiscated.
The judge highlighted that using the internet to access indecent images is often believed to be harmless but causes ongoing harm to children through their abuse, which is further perpetuated when such images are viewed.
