JAMES MAHONEY FROM HARTLEPOOL ESCAPES JAIL AFTER HORRIFIC CHILD PORNOGRAPHY DISCOVERY IN TEESSIDE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Hartlepool and the wider Teesside area, James Mahoney, a 36-year-old man, was found to possess an alarming collection of indecent images of children, including some of the most severe category A material. The investigation was initiated after authorities identified an email address linked to Mahoney that was actively used to receive these illicit images.
Police officers responded swiftly to this lead, visiting Mahoney’s residence on Jutland Road in Hartlepool.
During the search, they seized multiple pieces of computer equipment, which were later examined for evidence.
Mahoney was taken into custody and questioned about his online activities.
During his arrest, he claimed to police that he had been 'looking at stories' on the internet, a statement that raised further concern.
In a formal interview, Mahoney admitted to using specific search terms such as 'daughter rape' and 'schoolgirl sex' in his online searches, which led to the discovery of hundreds of indecent images.
The police investigation revealed that Mahoney had collected a total of 2,394 images, categorized into different levels of severity: 809 images classified as the most serious category A, 671 as category B, and 914 as the least serious category C.
Among these disturbing images was one depicting a baby being sexually abused, and another showing a young child in forced sexual contact with a dog, highlighting the grotesque nature of his collection.
Mahoney, a father of two, faced charges related to the possession of indecent images of children, which he admitted to in court.
The charges covered the period between September and November of 2014.
His case was heard at Teesside Crown Court, where Judge Peter Armstrong presided over the proceedings.
The judge acknowledged the severity of the material but also considered Mahoney’s mental health and remorse.
In his sentencing, Judge Armstrong imposed a 10-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years.
The court also mandated Mahoney to participate in a sexual offender treatment program, emphasizing the importance of addressing his distorted thinking.
The judge stated, “If I sent you to prison for what would be a short sentence, you would not get any help to address your distorted thinking.
There is greater benefit to the public that you do get treatment.” Furthermore, Mahoney was subjected to a 10-year order restricting his internet use and prohibiting any unsupervised contact with children.
He is also required to register as a sex offender for a decade.
The computer equipment seized from his residence was confiscated and is set to be destroyed, preventing any further dissemination of the illegal material.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and highlights the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from such heinous crimes.
