A healthcare professional from Cheshire, James Peter Farthing, aged 28, has been involved in a disturbing online grooming case that has garnered significant attention from law enforcement and the community alike.Farthing, who was working as a junior doctor for the NHS in Stockport, engaged in illicit communication with what he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, but in reality, was an undercover police officer conducting the investigation.
The case came to light when Farthing initiated a conversation via messaging platforms Kik and Snapchat, using the username 'olderc**k' on Kik.
During their exchanges, he blatantly inquired about the young girl’s body, asked for explicit photographs, and shared images of his own penis.
The conversations revealed Farthing’s intention to engage in sexual activities with a minor, a fact he was aware of as he referred to her age explicitly.
The police operation that led to this arrest involved a police officer posing as the young girl, who was purportedly from Liverpool and named 'Beth'.
To emphasize her young age, the officer used images of kittens and other cues.
During these conversations, Farthing, who claimed he was 23 and from Leeds, repeatedly expressed a desire to see 'Beth's' body and even asked if she would be interested in role play or sexual acts.
He further requested explicit images from her, offering to send his own pictures in return.
Throughout the exchanges, Farthing tried to reassure 'Beth' that it was safe to send images, as long as her face was not visible.
Despite the police revealing her true age of 13, he persisted with sexualized conversations, including asking if she liked older men.
He explicitly sent pictures of his genitals, stating his desire to touch her body and see her naked.
The explicit content escalated, with Farthing sending additional images of his penis.
Law enforcement officials captured Farthing’s eventual arrest after he attempted to rationalize his actions to officers, claiming he was 'ashamed' and had tried to cease the conversations but ultimately gave in to sexual urges.
During the court proceedings, his defense team argued that his behavior was influenced by the intense pressures of working long hours during the Covid pandemic, along with personal issues such as his wife’s health condition and his ongoing training.
They pointed out that Farthing was battling emotional struggles, had been watching pornography, and smoking cannabis at the time, adding that he was actively working to address his personal issues.
His crimes were confirmed when he admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child.
Judge Tina Landale presided over the case at Minshull Street Crown Court, where she sentenced Farthing to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
He was convicted of attempting to indulge a child aged 13 or over in sexual activity without penetration, as well as trying to involve her in viewing sexual images.
The sentences for these charges were ordered to run concurrently.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Farthing was ordered to participate in the Horizon rehabilitation project, which aims to prevent future offenses, complete 20 days of rehabilitation activities, and undertake 200 hours of unpaid community service.
Furthermore, he was subjected to a comprehensive sexual harm prevention order that will be in place for ten years, reflecting the seriousness with which the court treated this case.
