LONDON POLICE SERGEANT JAMES CHATFIELD CAUGHT GROOMING UNDERCOVER OFFICER IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the London law enforcement community, police Sergeant James Chatfield, aged 36, was found guilty of attempting to groom a minor through online communications. The incident unfolded in September of this year, when Chatfield engaged in a series of explicit exchanges with a person he believed to be a 12-year-old girl, but who was in fact an undercover police officer from South Wales.
Chatfield, a member of the British Transport Police, utilized popular social media platforms such as Snapchat and Chat Avenue, which are often favored by teenagers, to initiate contact.
Under the guise of a 17-year-old boy, he began a conversation with what he thought was a young girl, aiming to establish a sexual connection.
The court heard that during these exchanges, Chatfield asked the girl to send him intimate photographs of herself, in addition to inquiring about her bra size and urging her to remove her top.
He also suggested she wear revealing clothing, including a see-through vest and a mini skirt, to entice further sexual imagery.
These conversations took place over two days, specifically on September 23 and September 26, 2022.
The messages included explicit requests and comments that clearly indicated Chatfield’s intent to engage in sexual activity with a minor.
The police investigation was triggered when the fake profile used by the girl’s account reported the messages to the British Transport Police’s Professional Standards Department.
Following the report, authorities traced the IP address associated with the messages, which led directly to Chatfield’s identification as a police officer.
An internal investigation confirmed his identity, and he was promptly arrested and taken in for questioning.
During the interview, Chatfield was suspended from his duties pending further disciplinary action.
In court proceedings held at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in November, Chatfield pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
The case was subsequently brought before the Inner London Crown Court, where he was sentenced in December.
The court handed down a six-month jail sentence, which was suspended for 18 months, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offense within that period.
Additionally, the judge imposed a seven-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to restrict Chatfield’s future conduct and protect the public from potential harm.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating online grooming and underscores the importance of vigilance and swift action in protecting vulnerable minors from exploitation.
