Chesterfield Child Sexual Abuser
In March 2019, James Adkin, a 33-year-old man from Eyre Street East, Hasland, Chesterfield, was convicted after being caught with disturbing indecent images and videos of children. He was apprehended following an undercover operation where police officers posed as an 11-year-old girl named Abbey in an online chat.

During a court hearing on Wednesday, March 6, Derby Crown Court heard that Adkin engaged in sexual conversations with the fake minor before police executed a search warrant at his residence. They uncovered numerous indecent images and movies of children, which appeared to have been shared via peer-to-peer applications.

Prosecutor Sarah Allen explained, “An undercover police officer posed as an 11-year-old girl called Abbey, and the defendant corresponded with her on January 30, 2018, through an application called Kidschat.” She added that “the conversation involved her claiming she had engaged in sexual activities with boys and included a discussion about Abbey touching her genitalia.”

Following the online communication, police searched Adkin’s home and seized evidence which was analyzed by investigators. The search revealed a total of 209 Category A indecent images and three videos, 191 Category B images and two videos, and 710 Category C images and four videos. Most of these images depicted girls aged between three and 11, with some showing boys aged nine to 11. Police also found 478 extreme pornographic images, including bestiality involving dogs and horses.

Adkin admitted to police that he had been interested in such material for about ten years, initially starting with Teenchat. He stated he had communicated with girls aged 13 to 15 but believed he was talking to individuals over 12. He also disclosed that he engaged in “age-play” with other adults and enjoyed the thrill and risks associated with it. Adkin further admitted to being attracted to girls, engaging in masturbation while talking to minors online, and requesting photos from them.

He pleaded guilty to four charges: attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and possessing indecent images categorized as A, B, and C. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to a fifth count involving possession of extreme pornography featuring bestiality.

Judge Nirmal Shant QC addressed Adkin, stating, “The reality is somewhere a child has been abused in the most horrible way, and viewing these images encourages people to put children in that position.” She emphasized that Adkin deserved prison time but also considered the importance of addressing his behavior to protect the public.

Ultimately, Judge Shant QC sentenced Adkin to a three-year community order, which includes participation in a sexual group work program, a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and 75 hours of unpaid work. Adkin was also ordered to register with authorities under notification requirements for five years and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period, preventing him from engaging in activities involving children.

The judge warned Adkin, “Any breach will put you back before me, and you will receive a custodial sentence.”
