JAKE MILLS FROM CHESTERFIELD SENTENCED FOR MULTIPLE SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST VULNERABLE WOMEN
Jake Mills, aged 21 and residing on Boythorpe Road, Boythorpe, Chesterfield, has been convicted of a series of disturbing sexual offenses that took place on the streets of Chesterfield. His criminal actions spanned over a year, involving both violent and predatory behavior targeting women of varying ages, including elderly pensioners.
The court proceedings revealed a pattern of calculated assaults and indecent exposure, highlighting Mills' dangerous conduct and the profound impact on his victims.
In November 2020, Mills initiated his first known attack by following a young woman into an alleyway at approximately 5:40 am.
The victim, who was on her way to work, encountered Mills standing in the street near her Chesterfield home.
He engaged her in conversation, offering her a spliff and a cigarette, and then proceeded to walk alongside her as they approached the dark alley.
Once inside, Mills' behavior shifted dramatically.
He positioned himself in front of her, embraced her, and forcibly kissed her multiple times despite her repeated attempts to resist.
During the assault, he exposed himself, and when the victim tried to push him away, Mills attempted to force her to perform oral sex.
Fortunately, she managed to fend off his advances and escape.
The court heard that Mills then asked her to add him on Snapchat before walking away.
While under investigation for this incident, Mills was released on bail.
However, on the same day, he committed further offenses.
He exposed himself to two elderly women, aged 70s and 80s, while they were walking along Chesterfield streets.
In one case, an 82-year-old woman was approached by Mills in his black car, where he asked her the time and then invited her to get into his vehicle, suggesting it would be beneficial for her.
As she walked away, Mills exposed himself and followed her, touching himself in the process before driving off.
The second victim, a 77-year-old woman, was approached as she was heading to buy a newspaper.
Mills repeatedly asked her the time, followed her in his car, and when she neared her home, he opened his car door, revealing his genitals and attempting to persuade her to engage in sexual activity.
A passing driver noticed her distressed state and stopped to check on her, prompting Mills to flee.
Further investigations linked Mills to these incidents through CCTV footage and physical evidence, including a missing panel from his car interior.
His DNA was recovered from the glasses of the victim involved in the November 2020 attempted rape, cementing his connection to the crime.
Adding to his criminal record, Mills was also involved in a separate incident in September 2021, where he followed a young woman jogging in Tapton.
She reported that Mills' black vehicle followed her, and she observed a missing panel from his car.
Later that morning, police received a call from another elderly woman, aged 77, who reported Mills' car following her as she walked to buy a newspaper.
When Mills approached her, he was found with his trousers around his ankles and his penis in his hand, attempting to persuade her to have sex.
A passing driver, witnessing her distressed state, stopped to assist, which caused Mills to flee in his vehicle.
Throughout the trial at Derby Crown Court, the prosecution, led by Laura Pitman, detailed the extent of Mills' predatory behavior.
The court heard how Mills targeted vulnerable women, including elderly pensioners, because they were less able to defend themselves.
Judge Nirmal Shant QC described Mills' actions as profoundly damaging, noting the lasting trauma inflicted on his victims.
The judge emphasized that Mills' low IQ, as indicated in a psychological report, did not justify his conduct but perhaps explained his decision-making.
In sentencing, Mills was ordered to serve a minimum of eight years in prison, with at least two-thirds of that term to be served before parole considerations.
Additionally, he received an extended license period of four years post-release.
The court also imposed an 18-year sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits Mills from approaching lone females he does not know and from driving any vehicle without registering its details with the police.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to protect vulnerable members of the community from predatory offenders like Jake Mills.
